Chapter 2 - The Awakening of the Sovereign

"Rebecca," Mark breathed, his voice trembling as he tried to force a smile of pure, relief-filled joy onto his face. He made a move to rush toward the side of my bed, his hands reaching out to clutch mine. "Oh, my darling... thank God. You're awake. You're alive. The doctors... they scared us so badly. I thought—"
"Don't touch me, Mark," I said. The words were quiet, but they carried the force of an iron gate slamming shut.
He froze, his hands hovering inches from the white hospital blanket. The sheer terror in his eyes was the most beautiful thing I had seen in years. He looked at me, searchingly, trying to find the pliable, grieving orphan he had married. But that girl had died on the delivery table. The woman looking back at him now was the daughter of Arthur Moore—the man who had broken unions, bought out competitors, and built a global hotel empire from a single, rocky cliff in Maine.
"Rebecca, please," Mark whispered, his eyes darting toward the recovery room window where two uniform security officers had just taken up positions. "You're confused. The medication... you've been through a terrible trauma. Let me explain. Claire and I... it’s not what you think. She was just comforting me. I was losing my mind thinking I had lost you."
"I have the messages, Mark," I said, my gaze moving from his pale face to Claire, who was now trembling so hard her pearl necklace was vibrating against her collarbone. "I have the messages from the secondary phone you kept in the guest bathroom. The ones where Claire talked about there being 'nothing tying you to my body' once the baby was gone. The ones where Agnes talked about ensuring the doctor on duty was the one she had paid off."
Agnes let out a sharp, choked gasp. "That... those are fabricated! You've been hallucinating, Rebecca! The pregnancy hormones—the stress of carrying twins—it has made you paranoid!"
"The phone is currently in the possession of the New York Police Department's digital forensics unit," Evelyn said, her voice dropping like a heavy iron weight. "Along with the chemical analysis of the herbal tea canisters we retrieved from the mansion kitchen yesterday afternoon. The toxicology report from Rebecca’s blood work during her admission showed trace amounts of blue cohosh and concentrated ergotamine—substances known to cause severe, life-threatening uterine contractions and cardiac distress when administered in unregulated doses."
Mark’s head slowly turned toward his mother. "Mother... you poisoned her?"
"I did it for us!" Agnes screamed, her elegant mask completely shattering. She lunged toward the bed, her fingers clawing at the air as if she could claw the truth back into the dark. "She didn't deserve him! My son is a genius! He designed her hotels! He built her brand! And she treated him like a kept man!"
Before she could reach me, the two security officers burst through the door, grabbing Agnes by the arms and pinning them behind her back.
"Get your hands off me!" she shrieked, her expensive diamond bracelets scraping against the metal of their badges. "Do you know who I am? I am Agnes Holden! My family—"
"Your family is currently facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and grand larceny," Evelyn said, not even looking up from her papers. "Officers, please escort Mrs. Holden and Ms. Claire to the security holding area downstairs. Detective Martinez is waiting for them."
"Mark!" Claire cried out as an officer grabbed her elbow, her perfect, manicured facade dissolving into ugly, terrified weeping. "Mark, do something! You promised me we’d be in the penthouse by next week! You promised me!"
Mark didn't look at her. He kept his eyes on the floor, his shoulders slouched, his entire body deflating as if the air had been let out of his ambition.
As the doors closed behind the screaming women, the recovery room fell into a heavy, ringing silence. Only the steady beep of the heart monitor remained.
"Rebecca," Mark said, his voice dropping to a low, desperate plea. "I didn't know about the tea. I swear to you, I didn't know my mother was trying to hurt you. I love you. I love our children. Please... we can fix this. For the babies. They need a father."
I looked at Dr. Jonathan, who was standing at the foot of my bed, his face grim. "Jonathan, can you please have my babies brought to me? I want to see them."
"Of course, Rebecca," Jonathan said, a gentle, paternal smile softening his tired eyes. He looked at Mark, his expression turning to stone. "Mr. Holden, your presence is no longer required in this hospital. In fact, if you do not leave the premises within the next two minutes, I will have you removed for medical interference."
Mark looked at me, his eyes begging for a mercy he had never intended to show me.
"Evelyn," I said, my voice regaining its strength, the old Moore steel ringing through every syllable. "Please serve him with the divorce papers. And tell the board to initiate the immediate audit of his architectural firm."
Mark’s face went completely blank. His architectural firm was ninety percent funded by Moore Grand subsidiaries. Without my father’s money, he wasn't a brilliant designer; he was a bankrupt man with a stack of sketchbooks.

"This isn't over, Rebecca," Mark whispered, his voice suddenly losing its desperation and turning cold, sharp, and venomous. "You think you can just throw me out like trash? I’m the father of your heirs. The law will give me access to those children. And through them, I’ll take every single brick of your father’s hotels."
"Try it, Mark," I said. "And see what's left of you when I'm done."
