Chapter 9 - The Criminal Trial Verdict

Three months later, the main courtroom of the Denver District Courthouse was packed to capacity with local media reporters, legal observers, and members of the public.

The trial of State of Colorado v. Diego Vance had drawn massive public attention across the state, becoming a high-profile symbol of systemic domestic abuse and financial corruption among the wealthy elite.

I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery, wearing a crisp ivory blazer and trousers. My hair was styled naturally, the small pink scar near my temple visible—a mark of survival, not shame. Beside me sat Brenda and my assistant, Marcus, who had come to support me.

Across the room sat Diego at the defense table, wearing a dark grey suit that swallowed his diminished frame. Beside him sat a team of three federal defense lawyers, but his parents were nowhere to be seen. Arthur Vance was facing a separate federal indictment for corporate tax evasion uncovered during the fraud audit, and Victoria had been barred from the courtroom after causing a dramatic scene during jury selection.

Judge Helen Torres presided over the bench.

"Will the jury foreperson please stand," Judge Torres announced, her authoritative voice filling the silent courtroom.

A middle-aged woman in the jury box stood up, holding a folded piece of paper.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict on all counts?"

"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson replied clearly.

"On Count One, Second-Degree Assault Domestic Violence, a Class 4 Felony, how do you find the defendant?"

The foreperson looked directly at Diego.

"We find the defendant, Diego Vance, Guilty."

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Diego collapsed back into his chair, covering his face with his trembling hands, a choked sob escaping his throat.

"On Count Two, Criminal Identity Theft and Financial Forgery, a Class 3 Felony, how do you find the defendant?"

"We find the defendant, Diego Vance, Guilty."

"On Count Three, Felony Violation of a Protection Order, how do you find the defendant?"

"We find the defendant, Diego Vance, Guilty."

Judge Torres nodded, accepting the verdict sheets from the bailiff. She turned her sharp gaze down toward Diego, her expression unyielding and cold.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Torres spoke with severe authority. "You come from a background of immense financial privilege, yet you chose to execute a violent, cowardly attack against your wife because she refused to surrender her hard-earned independence to satisfy your family’s sense of entitlement. Furthermore, you engaged in systemic criminal fraud to steal her wealth."

She slammed her heavy wooden gavel down.

"I am remanding you into immediate custody without bail pending sentencing," Judge Torres ruled sternly. "Mr. Vance, you are facing a statutory range of six to twelve years in the State Department of Corrections. Bailiffs, take the defendant into custody."

Two armed sheriff's deputies stepped forward, pulling Diego to his feet and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Diego was led away toward the side holding cell door, he turned his head frantically, his tear-streaked face searching the gallery until his eyes met mine.

"Valerie!" he cried out, his voice pathetic and broken. "Valerie, please! Help me!"

I stood up slowly from my seat. I didn't look away, I didn't smile, and I didn't show anger. I simply watched him being dragged through the heavy steel door until the iron latch clicked shut, ending his freedom and his presence in my life forever.
