Chapter 8 - The Final Legal Hammer

I arrived at the precinct thirty minutes later, flanked by Daniel and Julian.
When we walked into the holding area, Grant was sitting handcuffed to a metal bench in the interview room. He looked pathetic—his suit jacket torn, mud smeared across his trousers, his hair sticking up in wild spikes.
When he saw me enter, he stood up abruptly, the metal handcuffs rattling against the bench.
"Clara!" Grant cried out desperately. "Tell these officers to release me! It was a misunderstanding! I just wanted to see my little girl! I miss her, Clara! I miss our family!"
I stood across the glass window, looking at him with absolute, cold composure.
"You don't miss family, Grant," I said, my voice echoing through the intercom system. "You miss status. You miss power. And you're terrified that you are finally realizing you are nothing without the leverage you tried to steal from me."
Daniel stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and laying three heavy legal documents against the glass window.
"Grant Vance," Daniel read in a crisp, authoritative tone. "You are hereby served with a formal criminal complaint for felony stalking, breach of the peace, and violation of the permanent civil protection order issued by the Superior Court six months ago."
Grant’s eyes widened in panic. "Breach of protection order? I was just in a public park!"
"A public park fifty yards from Clara’s private residence," Daniel countered sharply. "Furthermore, because you approached a minor child who holds a full, permanent sole-custody protection decree, the district attorney has upgraded the charges to attempted custodial interference."
"No... no, please!" Grant stammered, looking at Julian, who stood beside me, his arm wrapped protective around my shoulders. Grant’s eyes flashed with pathetic jealousy. "Who is he?! Who do you think you are, standing next to my wife?!"
Julian looked at Grant quietly, his expression filled not with anger, but with profound disdain.
"She isn't your wife, Grant," Julian said calmly. "She hasn't been your wife for a very long time. And as of yesterday, I have officially submitted the paperwork to adopt Lily as my lawful daughter—a petition that Clara has fully endorsed."
Grant froze as if hit by a physical blow. "Adopt her? No! You can't take my bloodline!"
"You surrendered your bloodline in a hospital room two hours after she was born, Grant," I said, my voice cutting through his frantic babble like a sharp blade. "You called her a useless girl. You left us for a woman carrying another man's child. You made your choice."
"Clara, please!" Grant sobbed, pressing his trembling, handcuffed hands against the glass partition. "Don't do this to me! I have nothing left! If I go to prison, my life is completely over!"
"Your life was over the moment you mistook my kindness for weakness," I replied softly.
I turned my back on the glass window.

"Process the charges, Daniel," I instructed my brother. "Make sure the court enforces the maximum penalty."
We walked out of the precinct, leaving Grant’s screaming, panicked pleas ringing in the cold hallway behind us, fading into total silence.
