Chapter 7 - Showdown at Pier 32

The San Diego bay was shrouded in a heavy, cold fog as dusk fell over Pier 32.

Industrial shipping containers were stacked three stories high along the concrete docks. The sound of waves crashing against steel pilings echoed through the dark, deserted shipyard.

A single sleek black sedan pulled onto the pier, its headlights cutting through the thick mist.

Ava stepped out of the car.

She wore a dark coat, her hair damp from the sea spray. Her hands were buried in her coat pockets. She walked steadily toward the center of the docks, where a large luxury yacht was moored against the concrete barrier.

Standing near the edge of the dock, flanked by three armed mercenaries in dark jackets, was Julian Vance.

Beside him stood Evelyn Pierce, clutching Leo by his jacket collar. Leo’s hands were zip-tied in front of him, but his chin was lifted, his heterochromatic eyes watching Ava with fierce relief.

"Mom!" Leo called out.

"I'm here, sweetie," Ava said, her voice remarkably calm and steady. "Stay still. Everything is going to be okay."

Julian Vance stepped forward, a cold, elegant smile on his face. He held a sleek silver handgun in his right hand, resting casually at his side.

"Punctual as always, Ava," Vance said smoothly. "Do you have the documents and the drive?"

Ava pulled a thick white folder and the metal flash drive from her coat pocket, holding them up in the dim light.

"Let my son go first," Ava demanded, her voice cutting through the sound of the ocean waves.

"I don't think you're in a position to negotiate, my dear," Vance chuckled. "Set the drive and the signed papers on the crate in front of you, and step back."

"Ava, don't listen to him!" Evelyn shouted, her voice laced with manic desperation. "Julian, take the papers and let's go! The authorities are searching the city!"

"Shut up, Evelyn," Vance snapped coldly, not even looking at her. "You've outlived your usefulness."

Evelyn froze, a flicker of terrifying realization dawning on her face.

Ava stepped forward, placing the folder and the flash drive on a wooden shipping crate five feet away. She took two steps back, keeping her hands visible.

"Now let Leo walk to me," Ava said.

Vance nodded to one of his mercenaries, who cut the zip-ties on Leo's wrists and shoved the boy forward.

Leo ran across the cold concrete, throwing his arms around Ava’s waist. Ava immediately pulled her son behind her back, shielding his body with hers.

"Are you hurt, Leo?" Ava whispered urgently, checking his face and arms.

"I'm okay, Mom," Leo whispered back. "I wasn't scared. I knew you'd come."

Vance walked up to the crate, picking up the folder and checking the signatures. He plugged the flash drive into a handheld tablet, verifying the financial files.

"Pleasure doing business with you, Ava," Vance smiled, raising his gun, pointing it directly at Ava’s chest. "Unfortunately, I can't leave any witnesses who know about the Cayman routing codes."

Evelyn gasped. "Julian! What are you doing?! You said we were leaving together!"

"You're a loose end, Evelyn," Vance murmured, shifting his sight slightly toward Evelyn. "And loose ends get cut."

Before Vance could pull the trigger, a loud, roaring engine tore through the fog.

A heavy silver SUV crashed through the wooden security barricade at the entrance of the pier, speeding down the concrete dock at sixty miles an hour!

"WHAT THE HELL?!" Vance screamed, firing two shots at the windshield!

The SUV didn't stop. It slammed directly into the side of Vance’s parked sedan, pinning two of his mercenaries against the shipping container with a deafening metallic crunch!

The driver's door flew open.

Logan Pierce jumped out of the vehicle, wielding a heavy iron tire iron!

His face was wild, his eyes screaming with unadulterated, primal rage.

"GET AWAY FROM MY FAMILY!" Logan roared!

Logan charged at Julian Vance, swinging the heavy iron bar with all his strength! The bar struck Vance’s gun hand with a sickening crack, shattering Vance’s wrist and sending the firearm flying off the dock into the dark ocean below!

Vance screamed in agony, clutching his broken wrist as he stumbled back toward the edge of the pier.

"Logan!" Evelyn shrieked, running toward her son. "Logan, help me!"

Logan didn't even look at his mother. He turned toward Vance, his eyes burning with years of built-up hatred and shame. He grabbed Vance by his lapels, lifting the older man over the safety railing of the dock.

"You tried to kill my son," Logan growled into Vance’s face, his voice sounding like grinding stones. "You destroyed my life."

"Logan... please..." Vance choked out, dangling over the cold, churning ocean thirty feet below.

"Logan, stop!" Ava shouted, stepping forward, holding Leo back. "Don't do it! The feds are here!"

Wailing sirens suddenly shattered the night as six black FBI vehicles and tactical SWAT vans surrounded Pier 32, their bright spotlights blinding the entire dock.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!" heavy bullhorns shouted over the fog.

Logan looked at Ava. He saw the horror in her eyes, and he saw his son watching him.

Slowly, Logan pulled Vance back over the railing and slammed him hard onto the concrete floor.

SWAT officers flooded the pier, tackling the remaining mercenary, pinning Julian Vance to the ground, and handcuffing Evelyn Pierce, who collapsed onto the cold concrete weeping hysterically.

Logan dropped the tire iron. He fell to his knees on the wet dock, raising his hands into the air, gasping for breath.

Ava held Leo tightly against her chest as the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the pier.

The nightmare was finally over.
