Chapter 6 - The Golden Horizon

The autumn wind swept down Fifth Avenue, carrying the crisp scent of roasted chestnuts and falling leaves.
I stood on the corner outside the Vaughn & Co. tower, looking up at the towering glass monolith gleaming in the late afternoon sun. My name was on the executive registry at the top of the building, my company was posting record quarterly profits, and my life was entirely my own.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out. A text message from Renee:
Dinner at Le Bernardin tonight at 8:00 PM. Reservations under 'CEO Martinez'. Wear something fabulous. We’re celebrating the rest of our lives.
I smiled, typing back a quick confirmation.
Behind me, the city roared with motion—taxis honking, pedestrians rushing past, business executives hurrying to close deals. But for the first time in my life, I wasn't rushing to keep up with anyone else's expectations. I wasn't waiting for permission, wearing a disguise, or smiling through humiliation.
