Chapter 2 - The Packing of Pride

The next twenty minutes were a masterclass in frantic humiliation.

Edward, who had always carried himself with an air of absolute corporate superiority, was reduced to throwing his clothes into garbage bags. His mother, Martha, spent the entire time weeping dramatically, wailing about her high blood pressure and how Blair was a monster who would be judged by high society. Henry silently and awkwardly dismantled his folding chair, refusing to meet anyone’s eyes.

Blair stood by the kitchen counter, watching the spectacle with a detachment that surprised even herself. The man she had loved, the man she had supported through two career transitions and whose ego she had constantly massaged, looked incredibly small.

"Blair," Edward muttered as he dragged a black trash bag full of his designer suits past her. He stopped, his voice dropping into a low, manipulative whisper. "Think about what you're doing. If you do this, there is no coming back. Our marriage is over. Is this really worth throwing away four years over a few bills and a misunderstanding?"

Marcus Vance stepped between them before Blair could even blink. "Mr. Edward, do not speak directly to my client. All future communications regarding your marital status will be handled through my office. Move along."

"You're a coward, Blair," Edward hissed, stepping back into the custody of Officer Martinez. "You hide behind cops and lawyers because you're too weak to have a real conversation with your husband."

Blair finally looked up, her eyes locking onto his with a clarity that made him flinch. "I had a conversation with you last night, Edward. Your answer was to throw a $142,000 bill in my face and lock me out of my own house. You didn't want a wife. You wanted a financial guarantor who wouldn't talk back. Well, the guarantor is closed for business."

"Time’s up," Officer Davis announced, grabbing the handle of Martha’s largest suitcase. "Let’s move it outside."

The exodus was a public spectacle. The neighborhood was fully awake now. Neighbors stood on their porches, coffee mugs in hand, watching as the wealthy, proud Edward and his arrogant parents were escorted out of the house by uniform police officers, carrying garbage bags and a birdcage covered in a faded blanket.

Martha stopped at the bottom of the porch steps, turning back to scream at the house. "You’ll rot in this house alone, Blair! Nobody will ever love a cold, calculated machine like you!"

The police officers didn't let her finish her tirade, firmly guiding her toward Edward’s truck.

As the truck engine roared to life and pulled away from the curb, followed closely by the police cruisers to ensure they left the neighborhood, the silence returned to the Casper street.

Blair stood on her porch, looking down at the broken deadbolt lying on the welcome mat. The locksmith, Arthur, walked up beside her, holding a new, high-security digital smart lock.

"Do you want me to code it so only your fingerprint opens it, ma'am?" Arthur asked gently.

Blair looked at her hand, which was no longer shaking. "Yes, Arthur. My fingerprint only. Let's make sure no one ever walks into my life without permission again."
