Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

The call from Vance came at 1:30 PM.

Daniel and I were sitting at the dining room table, surrounded by cold cups of coffee. When I picked up the phone and heard Vance’s voice, I expected to hear that Margaret and Arthur had been booked and released on bail. I wasn't prepared for what she actually had to say.

"Claire, Daniel," Vance said, her tone heavy. "We have executed the search warrant at the Mercer residence. Both Margaret and Arthur Mercer are currently in custody at the central station."

Daniel let out a long breath, burying his face in his hands. "Thank God."

"Don't sigh in relief just yet," Vance interrupted sharply. "We recovered the hardware used to stream the feed from the teddy bear. But while searching the house, my digital forensics technician discovered something else. Something much worse."

I gripped the edge of the table. "What is it, Detective?"

"They have a secondary, long-range camera system targeting your home," Vance revealed. "It's hidden somewhere near your property, pointing directly at your front door and driveway. According to the log files, it’s been transmitting data to a private server in Arthur Mercer's home office since last November."

My blood ran cold. Last November was eight months ago—the exact week we broke off contact with them.

"They've been watching us?" I gasped. "For eight months?"

"Not just watching," Vance said. "We pulled audio logs from their local server. They had a directional microphone array installed as well. They’ve been logging your daily schedules, when you leave for work, when Lily leaves for school, who visits your house, and what cars park in your driveway."

Daniel grabbed the phone from my hand, his voice shaking with pure rage. "Where is the camera, Vance?! Is it on my house right now?!"

"We have a forensics team on their way to your location to scan your property," Vance said. "I need both of you to stay inside, close all the blinds, and do not approach any trees, utility poles, or street signs near your boundary line. We need to preserve the physical evidence."

Within twenty minutes, two unmarked police cruisers pulled up outside our home. A specialist holding an RF (Radio Frequency) field detector walked slowly along our front lawn. The device emitted a low, steady hum that suddenly spiked into a high-pitched, frantic screech when he approached an old oak tree standing at the edge of our driveway.

The specialist hoisted a small aluminum ladder against the tree trunk. Nestled high inside a hollow cavity of the bark, disguised behind a layer of fake, color-matched resin, was a long-range optic camera and a small solar charging panel.

Daniel stood on the front porch, watching the officer unscrew the hidden device from the tree trunk. His body was trembling.

"My own parents," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable pain. "My own father... a former officer of the court. My own mother... who held my hand when I was sick. They turned our life into a zoo exhibit."

"They didn't do it because they loved you, Daniel," I said softly, wrapping my arm tightly around his waist. "They did it because they wanted control. And when you took away their control, they replaced it with obsession."

Just then, my phone chimed with a notification from our local news app.

A breaking news alert flashed across the screen:

[PROMINENT LOCAL ATTORNEY ARTHUR MERCER AND WIFE ARRESTED IN HIGH-TECH STALKING AND SURVEILLANCE SCHEME INVOLVING FAMILY MEMBERS.]

"It’s out," I said, showing Daniel the screen. "The police didn't keep it quiet."

"Good," Daniel said, his eyes turning cold and resolute. "Let the whole world see who they really are."
