Chapter 10 - A Golden Horizon

One year later.

The summer sun warm on the lush green lawn of the Miller home. The backyard was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious smell of grilled chicken and fresh lemonade.

It was Emma’s ninth birthday party.

The yard was decorated with golden balloons and pastel banners. A massive wooden playground set stood near the oak tree—a gift Grace had bought her kids. Half a dozen children from Emma and Noah’s school were running through the lawn sprinklers, squealing with excitement.

Mr. Vance, Grace’s attorney who had become a warm family friend, was sitting at the patio table chatting with Grace’s manager from Vanguard Holdings, who had dropped off a huge birthday gift for Emma.

Grace stood by the grill, wearing a simple white sundress, holding a glass of iced tea. She watched Emma blow out the candles on her pink birthday cake while Noah cheered wildly beside her.

"Make a wish, Emma!" Noah shouted.

Emma closed her eyes, smiled brightly, and blew out every single candle in one breath. Everyone clapped and cheered.

Emma cut the first slice of cake, walked right past her friends, and brought the plate over to Grace.

"First piece is for you, Mommy," Emma smiled, handing her the plate.

Grace caught her daughter’s eye and smiled, kneeling down to hug her tightly. "Thank you, my sweet girl. What did you wish for?"

"I didn't need to wish for anything," Emma whispered into Grace’s ear, wrapping her arms around her mother’s neck. "Everything I ever wanted is already right here."

Grace held her daughter close, feeling the warmth of the summer sun on her back and the deep, solid ground beneath her feet.

She looked back at the journey—from the cold carpet of her mother’s living room, through the storm of betrayal, to the triumphant peak of her independence. She had lost a toxic family, but in doing so, she had saved her children and discovered her own invincible soul.

Her phone, sitting silently on the patio table, didn't ring. And even if it did, Grace Miller was finally home, and her life was entirely her own.
