Chapter 7 - The Final Settlement

With Patricia officially convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of her life behind bars, Daniel’s financial house of cards completely collapsed.
The publicity surrounding his mother's trial ruined his corporate reputation. His partners at his investment firm voted unanimously to strip him of his shares and remove him from the company to save the firm from bankruptcy.
Two weeks after the criminal trial concluded, Daniel and I met for the final hearing in our divorce proceedings at the Maricopa County Family Court.
Daniel sat at his table alone, without an attorney. He couldn't afford one anymore. He wore a faded, ill-fitting suit, his hair messy, his face lined with deep exhaustion.
My attorney, Sarah Jenkins, presented our final proposed settlement agreement to the judge.
"Your Honor," Sarah explained, "under the proposed agreement, Mr. Vance agrees to grant Mrs. Vance sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance, with zero visitation rights until the child reaches eighteen years of age."
"Furthermore," Sarah continued, "Mr. Vance agrees to forfeit all claims to the marital property, as well as any interest in the late grandfather's inheritance trust, which will be placed into a court-monitored educational fund for Lily."
The family court judge turned to Daniel. "Mr. Vance, have you read these terms? Do you understand that by signing this document, you are surrendering all parental rights to your daughter?"
Daniel looked across the room at me. His eyes were red, filled with a deep, hopeless sorrow.
"Will she... will she ever know that I loved her?" Daniel asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"If you loved her, Daniel," I said softly from my seat, "you would have protected her from your mother. You chose money and fear over your own child."
Daniel stared at the floor for a long, agonizing moment. Then, with a slow, trembling hand, he picked up a black pen and signed his name on the bottom line of the divorce decree.

"It is done," the judge declared, signing the final order. "Mrs. Vance, your divorce is final. Your full maiden name, Rachel Miller, is officially restored."
I stood up, holding my head high. I felt no triumph, no joy, and no vengeance. I only felt a deep, overwhelming sense of relief that the dark shadow hanging over my daughter's life was finally gone forever.
