Chapter 10 - The Color of Safe

That evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, our family drove back into Toledo.
We pulled up the driveway of our small, familiar home.
The house looked beautiful. Dad had repainted the wooden siding a clean, crisp white, and the front garden was filled with blooming red roses and lavender that Mom had planted over the summer.
We stepped out of the truck into the cool, gentle evening air.
I walked up the front steps, stopping on the wooden porch.
Above the front door sat the small, round porch light.
I reached out and flipped the wall switch inside the door.
The bulb flickered once, twice, and then bathed the entire wooden porch in a warm, beautiful, brilliant blue glow.
My father walked up the steps, leaning against the porch railing, looking out over the quiet, peaceful neighborhood street. My mother joined him, resting her head against his shoulder.
Emily walked up beside me, leaning her back against the doorframe, looking up at the blue light illuminating the darkening sky.
“It really is the color of safe, isn't it?” Emily murmured softly, a peaceful smile lighting up her face.
I looked at my family—at my father whose back was no longer bent by fear, at my mother whose eyes were filled with peace, and at my little sister who had reclaimed her life, her voice, and her future.
The billionaire’s money was gone. The corrupt principal was locked away. The bullies had been held accountable.
But sitting here on this porch, under the blue light that had kept us safe through the deepest storm of our lives, I realized something far greater.
We hadn't just survived the dark.
We had conquered it.

“Yeah, Em,” I said softly, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as the stars began to sparkle in the night sky above us. “It’s the color of safe.”
