Chapter 8 - The Gala at the Drake

In December 2026, the Chicago Maritime Association held its annual Winter Charity Gala in the Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel.

It was the premier event of the city's high society—a gathering of federal judges, corporate CEOs, shipping titans, and political leaders. For years, I had attended these events alone, treated with distant, respectful caution by men who knew my history but respected my wealth.

Tonight was different.

The grand brass doors of the ballroom opened, and the herald announced: "Mr. Alessandro Moretti and Miss Sophia Carter."

A quiet ripple of admiration went through the three hundred guests as we stepped onto the marble dance floor under the blazing crystal chandeliers.

I wore a bespoke black tuxedo, looking impeccably groomed, but all eyes were on the woman on my arm.

Sophia was breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder midnight blue velvet gown that draped gracefully to the floor, her dark hair styled in an elegant updo secured with diamond pins. A brilliant diamond pendant—a Moretti family heirloom—rested against her collarbone, sparkling under the chandeliers.

She walked with supreme grace and quiet confidence, her chin held high, holding my arm with a gentle, solid warmth.

Among the crowd stood several wealthy socialites and corporate executives who had known Sophia during her years working for domestic agencies. I watched as three women near the champagne fountain whispered frantically among themselves, their eyes wide with shock.

"Is that... is that the girl who worked for Midwest Domestic?" "She's wearing the Moretti diamonds..." "He brought her as his partner..."

I stopped beside the head table where Mayor Thomas Vance—no relation to Julian—was standing with his legal team.

"Alessandro!" Mayor Vance greeted me warmly, shaking my hand firmly. "Fantastic turn-out tonight. And who is this lovely lady?"

"Mayor Vance," I said smoothly, my voice carrying clearly to everyone standing nearby. "May I present my fiancée, Sophia Carter."

The word fiancée echoed across the immediate circle with stunning clarity.

Sophia looked up at me, her cheeks flushing with a soft, radiant pink, her hand tightening around my arm as she offered the Mayor a brilliant, graceful smile.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Mayor," Sophia said, her voice smooth, articulate, and completely unbothered by the staring eyes around us.

"The pleasure is mine, my dear," the Mayor replied, bowing his head politely. "Alessandro is a lucky man."

As the orchestra began to play a slow, sweeping waltz, I led Sophia out onto the center of the mahogany dance floor.

I wrapped my right hand around her waist, pulling her close, while holding her left hand—the hand that now bore a flawless four-carat emerald-cut diamond ring—gently in mine.

We glided across the floor with effortless harmony.

"Fiancée?" Sophia whispered up to me, a playful, loving glint in her dark eyes as we turned under the warm lights. "You haven't officially asked me yet, Mr. Moretti."

I paused our turn, looking down at her face with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

"I am asking you right now, Sophia," I said softly, my gray eyes filled with a raw, undeniable devotion. "Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and raising our daughter?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness filled Sophia’s eyes.

She leaned up on her tiptoes, pressing her lips to mine right in the middle of the crowded ballroom, completely ignoring the applause that began to erupt around us.

"Yes," she whispered against my lips. "A thousand times, yes."
