Chapter 6 - The Mistress’s Secret

A month after Ray signed his cooperation agreement, I received a phone call I didn't expect.

It was from Chloe—Daniel’s former mistress.

We agreed to meet at a quiet, open-air café in North Naples, far away from the prying eyes of the legal teams and news reporters.

When I arrived, Chloe was already sitting at a corner table beneath a large green umbrella. She was twenty-five, wearing a simple denim jacket and no makeup, her dark hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. In a stroller beside her sat ten-month-old Liam—the half-brother my non-existent children would never have.

As I walked up to the table, Chloe stood up nervously, her hands trembling as she adjusted her shirt.

"Ms. Vance..." Chloe whispered, looking down at the ground. "Thank you for meeting me."

"Sit down, Chloe," I said gently, taking a seat across from her. "You don't need to be afraid."

She sat down, looking at me with a mix of awe and profound shame. "I... I don't even know where to start. I know you must hate me."

I looked at the baby in the stroller, who was sleeping peacefully under a light cotton blanket. He had Daniel’s dark hair, but his soft, gentle features belonged entirely to his mother.

"I don't hate you, Chloe," I said honestly. "I hated the lie. But you were just another casualty of Daniel’s narcissism."

Chloe let out a shaky breath, tears welling up in her dark eyes. "He told me he was single when we met at the law firm three years ago. He told me he was an investor in luxury real estate. When I got pregnant, he swore he was going to buy us a house in Miami as soon as his 'corporate restructuring' was finished."

"He was using my company’s money to pay your rent," I said, taking a sip of the water the waiter had set down.

"I didn't know!" Chloe sobbed, quickly wiping her cheeks with a napkin. "I swear on my child's life, I didn't know! If I had known he was married, if I had known he was stealing from his wife, I would have run away! The moment I saw his mugshot on the news, I called a lawyer."

"I know," I said softly. "Evelyn told me you cooperated fully with the federal prosecutor."

Chloe reached into her purse and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box, sliding it across the table toward me.

"What is this?" I asked.

"He gave this to me last Christmas," Chloe said, her voice tight with emotion. "It’s a diamond tennis bracelet. He told me he bought it at a high-end jeweler in Worth Avenue. But when I checked my bank records after his arrest, I realized he charged it to an American Express card registered under 'Vance Design Group.'"

I opened the velvet box. Inside lay a breathtaking, four-carat diamond bracelet that I had reported stolen from my home office safe eight months ago.

Daniel had stolen my jewelry out of my own home and handed it to his mistress as a token of his grand, fictitious wealth.

I closed the box with a soft snap.

"Keep it, Chloe," I said.

Chloe blinked in shock. "What? No... I can't! It’s yours! It was bought with your money!"

"Sell it," I instructed, pushing the velvet box back across the table toward her. "Sell it and put every single dollar into a college trust fund for Liam. That child didn't ask to have Daniel Caldwell as a father. He deserves a chance at a normal life."

Chloe stared at the velvet box, then looked up at me, tears streaming freely down her face. She reached across the table and grabbed my hand, pressing it tightly.

"You are the strongest, most gracious woman I have ever met," Chloe sobbed. "Daniel didn't deserve you. He didn't deserve a single second of your life."

"I know," I smiled softly, pulling my hand back gently. "That's why he’s sitting in a prison cell, and I'm sitting here."

As I walked away from the café into the warm Florida sunshine, I felt a heavy, invisible chain that had been wrapped around my heart for two years finally drop to the floor.

Daniel hadn't just tried to ruin me financially—he had tried to destroy my belief in human goodness. But standing there in the sun, knowing I had helped a young mother and her innocent child escape his shadow, I knew he had failed.

My heart wasn't broken. It was finally clear.
