Chapter 9 - The Eighth Birthday

June arrived, bringing with it bright sunshine, warm breezes, and the approach of Isla’s eighth birthday.

This time, there were no forced invitations to toxic relatives. There were no expectations of aristocratic perfection. There were no cream blazers, no cold eyes scanning the yard, and no quiet taxes to be paid.

The backyard of our Connecticut house was filled with thirty shouting, laughing seven- and eight-year-old children running through an elaborate obstacle course set up by my sister Renata. Parents sat on picnic blankets under the big maple tree, drinking homemade lemonade and eating grilled paninis.

In the center of the patio stood a magnificent, three-tier lemon cake, covered in bright yellow frosting, edible glitter, and dozens of delicate, hand-crafted sugar butterflies that Isla and I had made together over three glorious evenings in our kitchen.

At four o'clock, we gathered all the children around the table.

Isla stood in the center, wearing a bright green sun dress, her long brown hair tied back with a yellow ribbon, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness. Eight candles flickered merrily in the afternoon breeze.

"Make a wish, birthday girl!" Renata called out, holding up her camera.

Isla clasped her hands beneath her chin, closed her eyes tightly, and took a deep breath.

I stood right beside her, resting my hand gently on her shoulder—not to protect her from an attack, but simply to share in her joy. I looked at her beautiful, confident face, completely free from the marks of cruelty, completely secure in her place in the world.

She blew out all eight candles in one single, powerful breath.

The crowd of children erupted into loud cheers, clapping their hands and diving toward the paper plates.

Isla turned to me, wrapping her arms tightly around my waist, burying her face in my apron. "Thank you, Mommy," she whispered into my side. "This is the best birthday ever."

"You deserve every happy birthday in the world, my love," I whispered back, kissing the top of her head.
