Chapter 10 - The Quiet Kitchen

It was a crisp Friday evening in late autumn—the exact kind of evening, weather-wise, that my mother’s backyard wedding-rehearsal party had taken place two months ago.

I stood in my own kitchen, surrounded by the warm, amber glow of my apartment’s recessed lighting.

There were no yellow party lights strung between pine trees. There was no Motown playlist blasting over cheap plastic speakers. There was no crowd of fifty-two relatives judging my worth based on how much money I poured into their bottomless pits of vanity.

Instead, the only sound in the room was the gentle hiss of my kettle coming to a boil and the soft jazz playing from my Bluetooth speaker.

I poured my chamomile tea into my favorite ceramic mug, added a spoonful of honey, and walked over to the kitchen counter.

My banking app was open on my laptop screen.

For the first time in nine years, every single account balance was positive, growing, and entirely under my own control. No automatic withdrawals for my parents' mortgage. No secret credit card bills. No forced tuition installments for an ungrateful sister.

Just my life. My money. My peace.

My phone buzzed gently on the granite counter.

I glanced down, expecting another spam call or a blocked number. Instead, it was a notification from Marcus at work, forwarding an invitation to an industry gala next month.

Plus one? he wrote in the caption.

I picked up my tea, took a slow, delicious sip, and stared out my apartment window at the glittering lights of the city stretching out endlessly beneath the autumn stars.

May you like

I smiled, picked up my phone, and typed back two simple words:

Just one.
