Chapter 3 - THE PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

By 8:00 A.M. the next morning, I stood outside a modest office building on the outer edge of the city.

The frosted glass door read: Vance Investigative & Legal Consulting.

I walked inside, my hands trembling as I held a thick folder containing our mortgage documents, my late husband’s financial records, and my mother’s legal communications over the last three years.

Sitting behind a broad oak desk was Thomas Vance—a former police detective turned private investigator, known for his relentless work in family fraud and coercive control cases. He was a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties with sharp grey eyes and a calm, immovable presence.

"Mrs. Sarah Montgomery?" Thomas asked, standing up to offer a firm handshake. "Please, take a seat."

I sat down, taking a deep breath to steady my cracked voice. "Mr. Vance... I need help. My mother is psychologically abusing my daughter and using financial leverage to hold my home hostage. And I think... I think she lied about my husband’s estate."

Thomas pulled out a yellow legal pad and clicked his pen. "Start from the beginning, Sarah. Tell me everything."

For the next hour, I poured out the entire horrifying truth—the incident with the birthday cake, the cold threat Beatrice made in the kitchen, the gray folder she had used to terrify seven-year-old Emily, and the way she had quietly taken over the deed to my home after David’s death.

Thomas listened in complete silence, his brow furrowing deeper with every detail. When I finished, he set his pen down and leaned back in his chair.

"Your mother isn't just an overbearing parent, Sarah," Thomas said flatly. "What you are describing is textbook narcissistic coercive control coupled with legal extortion. But let’s address the most urgent matter: the gray folder."

"Do you think David actually wrote a letter?" I asked, my voice cracking with pain. "Did my husband hide something from me?"

"David Montgomery was an engineer with an unblemished record," Thomas said, pulling up a computer file on his desktop. "I took the liberty of running a preliminary background check when you booked the appointment. David had no debts, no criminal history, and no marital disputes filed anywhere. If your mother has a letter, it’s either a complete forgery or a manufactured legal document designed to exploit a child’s grief."

"She told Emily she would take her away from me," I whimpered, covering my face with my hands.

"She can't," Thomas said firmly, his voice cutting through my panic like a beacon of light. "Because as of today, we are fighting back. I’m going to run a full forensic audit on your late husband’s trust, the house deed, and your mother’s financial holdings. If Beatrice Vance has a weakness, Sarah... I will find it."

"And if she tries to come back to my house?"

Thomas reached into his drawer and pulled out two small, sleek black devices. "These are hidden high-definition cameras with live audio recording feeds. Install them in your living room and kitchen tonight. If Beatrice steps one foot on your property or speaks a single word to your daughter... we will have it on tape."
