Chapter 8 - The Unbreakable Bond

That evening, as the guests departed and the sun sank below the western hills, setting the clouds ablaze with orange and purple light, a quiet dinner was held on the wide back porch of the new Mercer home.
Sitting around the long oak table were Clara, Lily, Dr. Evelyn Reed, Marcus Vance and his wife, and David Vance.
In two wooden cribs on the porch, Noah and Grace slept peacefully, lulled by the gentle evening breeze rustling through the pine trees.
David set down his fork, looking over at Clara. "The DA informed me today that Harrison’s final appeal was rejected by the state supreme court. He’s going to serve his full fifteen-year sentence at the state penitentiary."
Clara took a sip of her tea, nodding slowly. "I hope... during those fifteen years, he learns to understand what he threw away."
"He never understood what wealth actually is," Marcus said gently, raising his wine glass. "Wealth isn't bank accounts or land deeds. It’s sitting at a table with people who love you."
"To real family," Dr. Reed toasted, clinking her glass against Marcus's.
"To real family," everyone echoed.
After dinner, David walked down to the edge of the garden, looking out over the peaceful valley. Clara walked down the stone path to join him, wrapping her cardigan tight against the cool night air.
"It’s hard to believe that less than a year ago, this place was full of fear," Clara said softy, looking up at the stars appearing in the night sky.
"You built something incredible out of that fear, Clara," David said, looking down at her with deep respect—and something warmer, something that had been growing between them steadily over the past several months.
David pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket.
Clara’s breath hitched. "David...?"
David opened the box. Inside was not an engagement ring, but a silver key attached to a small metal tag engraved with a badge number.
"This is the master key to the sanctuary gate," David said softly, his voice full of sincere emotion. "I asked the department for a permanent reassignment as the chief safety officer for this valley district. My shift starts tomorrow."
Clara looked from the key up into David’s kind, honest eyes. Tears of happiness filled her eyes as she took the key.

"You've been protecting us since the day you stepped into my kitchen, David," Clara whispered, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "You don't need a badge to be our family's protector."
David smiled, wrapping his arms around her, holding her close beneath the moonlight as the crickets sang in the high grass of the valley.
