Chapter 4 - The Subpoena

The following morning, the sun broke over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, cold light across the Chicago skyline. Inside the Evanston safehouse, Madison sat at the kitchen island eating a bowl of oatmeal while her father paced the floor, phone pressed to his ear, coordinating with investigators in Maui.
“I don’t care if they’re checked into the Four Seasons,” Daniel said into the phone, his voice hard as iron. “Serve them at the concierge desk. I want the process server standing in their private suite before they even unpack their swim trunks.”
He hung up the phone and tossed it onto the kitchen counter, letting out a heavy sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck.
“You should eat more, Maddy,” Daniel said, turning his attention to her plate. “You’ve grown up so fast. Last time I saw you, you were running around in pink sneakers with light-up heels.”
Madison looked up, a bittersweet smile playing on her lips. “I’m fifteen, Dad. I haven't worn light-up sneakers in a long time.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Daniel murmured, walking over and placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “To me, you’re still that little girl I had to leave behind in a dark hallway while your mother screamed at the door.”
Before Madison could answer, a sharp knock echoed from the front entryway.
Marcus Vance strode into the kitchen holding a tablet computer. His expression was a mix of professional triumph and suppressed amusement.
“It’s done,” Marcus announced, setting the tablet down on the island. “The process server in Maui just confirmed delivery. He handed the emergency custody summons, the child abandonment charges, and a financial freeze notice directly to Laura Carter and Richard Whitaker in the lobby of the Grand Wailea resort.”
Madison’s eyes widened. “In the lobby? In front of people?”
“In front of half the Chicago venture capital delegation vacationing there,” Marcus grinned. “According to our server, Richard dropped his Mai Tai glass right onto the marble floor. Laura tried to claim it was a misunderstanding, but the server informed her that failure to appear at the emergency Cook County family court hearing on Tuesday morning will result in an immediate bench warrant for her arrest.”
Daniel let out a sharp, humorless bark of laughter. “The vacation is officially over.”
“There’s more,” Marcus added, scrolling down the tablet screen. “Richard Whitaker’s legal team just called my office fifteen minutes ago in a total panic. Richard had no idea Laura left you at O’Hare. She told him you were staying with a ‘wealthy aunt in Wisconsin’ for the two weeks while they were away. Richard is currently packing his bags, threatening divorce, and demanding Laura book the next flight back to Chicago to face the music.”
Madison felt a strange, cold rush of vindication. For seven years, her mother had controlled every narrative, painting herself as the saintly, single mother sacrificing everything for her ungrateful daughter, while painting Daniel as a monster who abandoned them. Now, in less than twenty-four hours, the entire fragile house of cards Laura had built was collapsing under the weight of her own cruelty.
“What happens when she gets back?” Madison asked quietly.
Marcus looked at Daniel before answering. “When she gets back on Tuesday morning, she walks into Judge Harrison’s courtroom. We present the airport security footage of her dropping you off, the text message thread where she told you to ‘stop being dramatic,’ the financial records of the one hundred and eighty dollars she handed you as hush money, and the original forged custody documents from seven years ago.”
Marcus leaned forward, resting his hands on the island.

“And then, Madison... we ask the court to grant your father full, unrestricted legal and physical custody, alongside an immediate order requiring Laura to pay retroactive child support and cover all your educational and medical expenses moving forward.”
Daniel looked down at his daughter, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “And after that, Maddy... you never have to see her again unless you want to. You are safe. You are home.”
