Chapter 9 - The Family We Chose

A month later, we hosted a housewarming party at our new farm in Franklin.

There were no toxic relatives present. No manipulative mothers, no freeloading aunts, no scheming cousins.

Instead, our lawn was filled with true family—the people who had stood by us during the dark storm.

Victoria Sterling was there, laughing near the barbecue grill with Officer Chen and his wife. Investigator Sarah Lin had brought her young twin daughters, who were happily running through the sprinklers with Frederick. Amy’s sister and her husband were setting up a badminton net near the barn, while several of my construction engineering colleagues were helping me unpack boxes of outdoor furniture.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Tennessee sky in brilliant shades of orange, purple, and gold, I raised a glass to gather everyone’s attention.

"I want to thank everyone here tonight," I said, my voice rich with gratitude. "Two years ago, I thought family meant blood. I thought duty meant obeying people who used you and abused your trust."

I looked around the circle of warm, loving faces surrounding us.

"I was wrong," I continued, taking Amy's hand in mine. "Family isn't about blood or last names. Family is about the people who show up when you're broken. It's about the people who protect your children, who speak the truth when it's dangerous, and who help you rebuild your life from the ashes."

"To true family!" Victoria called out, raising her glass high.

"To true family!" the crowd echoed, their cheers ringing out across the quiet valley.

As the party continued into the warm evening, Amy nudged my arm gently and whispered, "Come with me for a second."

She led me away from the crowd, around the side of the house to the quiet garden path lined with blooming roses. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.

"What's this?" I asked, smiling.

"Open it," she said, her eyes sparkling with happy tears.

I opened the box. Inside lay a gold pocket watch, engraved on the back with a message in elegant script:

'To Connor—The man who walked through the door and chose us. Forever your loving wife, Amy.'

I looked up at her, my heart brimming with a joy so deep it felt almost overwhelming. I pulled her into my arms, lifting her off her feet as I kissed her deeply under the canopy of blooming mountain laurel.

"I will always walk through that door for you, Amy," I promised against her lips. "Every single time."
