Chapter 5 - The Screaming Call

By 10:25 AM, the glass-walled corridor outside the manager’s office sounded like a war zone.

Verity was pacing back and forth, her expensive heels clicking violently against the marble floor. Elowen was sobbing into a cluster of tissues, her mascara running down her cheeks, while Julian, the groom, stood awkwardly in the corner trying to reach his own parents for emergency funds.

"She did this on purpose!" Verity raged, her face flushed red. "The ungrateful, malicious little brute! After everything this family has done for her!"

"Mom, shut up!" Callan finally snapped, his voice cracking under the intense pressure. "Everything we’ve done for her?! Maren has been paying our mortgage subsidies for two years! She guaranteed this entire wedding because you said the trust was illiquid!"

"She is your wife!" Verity yelled back, stepping into Callan's face. "She is supposed to support this family! Not sabotage her sister-in-law's wedding because she didn't get an invitation for her illegitimate little—"

"Don't finish that sentence, Mom," Callan warned, his voice shaking with sudden, terrifying authority. "Don't you dare."

Arthur Pendelton stepped out of his office, flanked by two security guards. He held a physical printout of the facility rules.

"It is 10:28 AM," Arthur announced calmly. "No payment has been received. I am instructing the catering crew to pack their vehicles. The front gates will be closed in ten minutes."

"Wait!" Callan yelled, grabbing his phone. "Give me five minutes! Just five minutes!"

He retreated to the quietest corner of the courtyard, dialling Maren's personal emergency line—the one number she never ignored.

Back in the park, Maren was sitting on a wooden bench, holding a cup of cold brew coffee while Piper played on the swings. Her phone began to vibrate in her purse with a continuous, urgent ring pattern.

She pulled it out, looked at Callan’s caller ID, and swiped to accept.

"Maren?!" Callan's voice came screaming through the speaker, frantic, breathless, and laced with panic. "Maren, where are you?! What did you do to the venue account?!"

Maren kept her voice completely smooth, perfectly leveled, like a calm lake on a windless day.

"Good morning, Callan," she said softly. "How is your mother feeling? Has her condition improved?"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell on Callan's end of the line. He could hear the faint sound of children laughing in the background of her call.

"Maren... please," Callan choked out, his arrogance completely evaporating. "The Glasshouse just declined the master payment. The caterers are packing up. Elowen is having a panic attack. Mom is losing her mind. Arthur is about to lock the gates!"

"That sounds terribly stressful for them," Maren replied casually. "Logistically speaking, managing an unpaid vendor roster is always nightmare."

"Maren, stop it!" Callan yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "Why did you revoke the credit line?! We need $118,000 right now or the wedding is canceled!"

"Vanguard Events does not provide credit guarantees for events we are not invited to attend," Maren stated clearly. "And as a rule, my company does not finance functions hosted by people who refer to my daughter as 'a kid who doesn't belong with us.'"

Callan gasped. The air left his lungs all at once. "You... you heard that?"

"I hear everything, Callan," Maren said, her voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp and unyielding. "I heard your mother. I saw the guest list with twenty-two children on it. And I watched you pack a suit into a garment bag this morning while lying straight to your wife's face."

"Maren, I’m sorry!" Callan sobbed openly into the phone, uncaring if the vendors or his family saw him. "I was trapped! Mom threatened to cut me out of the family business if I didn't back her up! I didn't want to hurt you or Piper!"

"You didn't just hurt us, Callan," Maren said quietly. "You chose them. And now, you can ask them to pay for their wedding."

"Maren, wait! Don't hang up! Please!"

"Goodbye, Callan."

She ended the call, tapped the screen to place Callan’s number on block, and put her phone back into her bag.

Beside her, Piper ran up, breathless and smiling, holding a yellow dandelion. "Look, Mommy! I found a flower for you!"

Maren took the flower, pulled her daughter into a tight hug, and kissed her cheek. "It's beautiful, baby. Just beautiful."
