Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Network

The arrest was only the beginning of the avalanche.
Over the next two weeks, while I recovered in a secure short-term rehabilitation facility arranged by Evelyn, the full scale of the Vance family's deception began to come to light. Evelyn and her legal team launched an exhaustive forensic accounting investigation into Mason’s business dealings and his family’s finances.
What they discovered was shocking.
Mason hadn't just been controlling my life—he had been systematically embezzling from my personal pre-marital inheritance fund, which my late grandmother had left me. Over three years, he had transferred over $250,000 into a shell corporation registered under his mother’s maiden name. Beatrice used the funds to pay off her massive secret gambling debts at regional casinos, while Richard, Mason's father, had used portion of it to cover illegal tax evasion penalties.
Even worse, the police investigation into Mason's computer uncovered a series of calculated emails between him and a crooked HR assistant at my company. Mason had been paying the assistant to intercept my performance evaluations and salary review letters, ensuring I was kept in the dark about promotions and bonuses that would have given me financial independence.
"They didn't just want control, Clara," Evelyn explained during one of our afternoon strategy sessions, placing a thick binder of financial statements on my table. "They were systematically draining you dry before planning to cast you aside once the money ran out. The assault on your leg happened because you were beginning to ask questions about your bank statements."
I looked out the window at the sunny hospital garden. The physical pain in my leg was fading, replaced by a deep, cold fury that ignited my determination.
"How much bail was set for them?" I asked.

"The judge saw the video evidence and deemed Beatrice and Mason severe flight risks," Evelyn replied with a triumphant smile. "Bail was set at two million dollars each. Richard tried to leverage the house to post bail, but since the house was purchased partly with your stolen inheritance money, we placed a lis pendens lien on the property this morning. They are staying in jail until trial."
"Good," I said, setting down my tea. "Now let's take back everything else they stole."
