Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm

The next morning, the financial news networks were in a feeding frenzy.
WHITMORE FOUNDATION COLLAPSES AMID FEDERAL RAID. BILLIONAIRE PHILANTHROPIST RICHARD BENNETT PULLS PLUG ON CENTURY-OLD DYNASTY.
I sat in the penthouse living room, watching the morning news on a television screen the size of a theater wall, while Olivia and Grace sat cross-legged on the rug, coloring in brand-new sketchbooks Mrs. Gable had provided. Lily was asleep against my shoulder, her breathing steady and peaceful.
The doorbell chimed. A moment later, Richard’s chief legal counsel, a sharp, formidable woman named Diana Vance—no relation to the Whitmores, thankfully—walked into the room carrying an attaché case.
"Good morning, Emily. Good morning, girls," Diana said with a warm, professional smile. She turned to Richard, who was standing near the window reviewing a tablet. "It’s begun. Margaret’s primary banking accounts have been frozen by court order. The federal grand jury has accepted our initial brief regarding corporate tax fraud within the Whitmore Foundation."
Richard nodded without looking up from his screen. "And the personal assets?"
"We’ve filed an emergency injunction to seize the Greenwich estate as collateral for unpaid loans Margaret took out against Michael Whitmore’s life insurance policy—loans she fraudulently claimed were debts you owed, Emily." Diana opened her folder and pulled out a stack of documents. "Furthermore, we’ve uncovered evidence that Margaret forged Michael’s signature on several trust documents shortly after his death, diverting funds meant for your daughters into her private offshore accounts."
My hand flew to my mouth. "She stole from my girls?"
"Every single cent," Diana confirmed gently. "She assumed you were too broken down to fight back. That was her fatal mistake."
Before I could process the sheer scale of the betrayal, my cell phone—a brand-new smartphone Richard had handed me the night before—vibrated aggressively on the coffee table.
The caller ID flashed a private number.
My heart seized. I knew who it was.
"Answer it," Richard said, walking over and standing just behind the sofa, his presence a solid, reassuring wall at my back. "Put it on speaker."
With a trembling finger, I pressed the accept button and activated the speakerphone.
"Emily!" Margaret’s voice shrieked through the tiny speaker, stripped of all its aristocratic poise, sounding frantic, unhinged, and dripping with venom. "What have you done?! You ungrateful, miserable little leech! The federal marshals are at the estate! They're locking the gates!"
"Margaret," I said, my voice surprisingly steady, fueled by the warmth of the girls sleeping nearby and the towering presence of the man standing behind me. "I didn't do anything. The law is simply catching up with you."
"You think you can destroy the Whitmore name?!" she screamed, her voice cracking with fury. "You are nothing! Without my son, you are a homeless nobody sleeping in a gutter! I will hunt you down, Emily! I will take those three little brats away from you and leave you with nothing!"
"Mrs. Whitmore," Diana interrupted smoothly, leaning toward the phone. "This is Diana Vance, senior partner at Bennett Legal Group. Any further communication directed at Mrs. Emily Carter or her minor children will be recorded and filed as criminal harassment and witness intimidation. I advise you to speak exclusively through your court-appointed defense counsel from this moment forward."
There was a dead silence on the other end of the line.
Then, a frantic gasp. "Diana? Diana Vance? You're representing her?"
"We represent justice, Mrs. Whitmore," Diana replied coldly. "Have a terrible day."
May you like
She tapped the screen, cutting the call dead.
The living room fell back into a peaceful silence, broken only by the soft scratching of crayons on paper as Grace colored a blue sky over a green house.
