Chapter 10 - The View from the Beach

That evening, the sunset over Puget Sound was a breathtaking canvas of deep violet, fiery orange, and soft pink.

I walked along the sandy shoreline of Alki Beach, holding Micah’s small, warm hand in mine. He was wearing his little yellow rain boots, stomping happily through the shallow tide pools, laughing aloud every time the water splashed against his legs.

Beside us walked Clara, and Jonathan Reyes—who had become a dear family friend and trusted mentor over the past two years.

"Look, Mommy! A sea shell!" Micah chirped, bending down with endless toddler enthusiasm to pick up a smooth, pink shell washed ashore by the gentle waves.

He ran over and placed it proudly in my palm.

"It’s beautiful, sweetheart," I said, kneeling down on the sand to hug him tightly against my chest. I buried my face in his soft hair, smelling the sweet, clean scent of ocean air and baby shampoo.

I looked out across the vast, shining expanse of the water.

Two years ago, I was trapped in a cold kitchen in Maple Valley, standing across from a husband who threatened to destroy my life because I refused to let his mother poison our child.

I had been scared, isolated, and pushed to the absolute edge.

But in that moment of terror, when I broke the seal on that gold tin and threw it into the trash, I hadn't just rejected a toxic gift. I had rejected the lie that I was powerless.

I stood up, holding my son securely on my hip, feeling the cool salt breeze on my face.

The sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky in gold and violet.

My life was no longer defined by the darkness of what they had tried to do to us. It was defined by the strength it took to stand up, the courage to speak the truth, and the endless, unbreakable love of a mother protecting her child.

Micah rested his head softly against my shoulder, pointing out at a ferry boat glowing with lights on the dark water.

"Look, Mommy," he whispered softly. "It’s bright."

"Yes, my sweet boy," I smiled, holding him close as we walked home under the stars. "It’s very bright."
