Chapter 10 - The Garden at Iowa

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in southern Illinois.

The rolling hills of my family's old farm were alive with lush green grass, blooming wild apple trees, and clear blue skies that stretched out forever toward the horizon.

A small, beautiful wooden pavilion had been set up near the edge of the old oak grove—the very spot where my parents used to sit on summer evenings.

White linen draped gracefully over the wooden arches, surrounded by hundreds of blooming wild sunflowers, white roses, and fresh green ivy.

Fifty guests were gathered on the lawn—my family from Iowa, Cole Briggs and his team, the senior executives of Vance Global Development, and close friends who had supported me through my transformation.

At the front of the altar stood Gabriel Thorne, looking handsomer than ever in a classic navy suit, his eyes fixed on the path leading from the house, filled with intense, joyful emotion.

The string quartet began to play a gentle, acoustic rendition of a sweet Midwestern hymn.

I walked out from the farmhouse.

I wore an exquisite, simple ivory lace gown that flowed softly with the spring breeze. My hair was styled in soft waves, adorned with a few small white blossoms. In my hands, I held a bouquet of fresh sunflowers tied with a golden ribbon.

I didn't need a heavy pearl necklace. I didn't need fifty-thousand-dollar designer shoes. I was a sovereign, powerful, independent woman walking toward a man who loved me for exactly who I was.

Beside me walked Cole Briggs, proudly escorting me down the grass aisle, his eyes shining with tears of pure joy as he brought me toward the altar.

"You look beautiful, Em," Cole whispered softly, his voice trembling with emotion. "Your mom and dad are looking down from heaven right now, smiling as big as the sky."

"Thank you, Cole," I whispered back, squeezing his arm tightly. "Thank you for stopping your truck on Ashland."

"Best decision I ever made," Cole grinned through his tears.

Cole placed my hand into Gabriel’s waiting palm.

Gabriel took my hand, holding it with a gentle, fierce devotion that made my heart sing. He looked into my eyes, leaning close to whisper, "You take my breath away, Emily Vance."

"And you give me mine, Gabriel," I smiled back.

The local minister stepped forward, his voice echoing warmly over the peaceful green hills.

"We are gathered here today in the presence of family and nature to celebrate the union of two hearts built on respect, trust, and unyielding love..."

As we exchanged our vows under the warm spring sun, I looked out over the vast, beautiful fields where I had grown up.

I thought about the dark dining room in the Gold Coast. I thought about the cold, blood-stained slaughterhouse on 43rd Street. I thought about the coward husband who had left me to die, and the mother-in-law who had tried to erase my existence.

They had tried to bury me.

They didn't know I was a seed.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister smiled broadly. "Gabriel, you may kiss your bride."

Gabriel took me in his arms, dipping me gently as he pressed his lips to mine in a long, passionate kiss that made the entire lawn erupt into joyful, booming applause and cheers.

Cole cheered loudly, waving his hat in the air, while my friends threw white flower petals into the sky.

Gabriel lifted me up, laughing joyfully, and took my hand as we walked back down the aisle together toward the sunlit farmhouse.

My past was gone. My revenge was complete.

And my real life—filled with endless love, peace, and absolute freedom—had finally begun.
