Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Light

Three years after the day my hospital bed was left empty, I stood on the grand stone terrace of my countryside estate at sunset.

The sky was painted in brilliant ribbons of gold, crimson, and deep violet. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the soft murmur of the river in the distance.

In my hand, I held a small leather-bound journal. I flipped back to the very first entry I had written three years ago, sitting in that cold hospital room with six stitches in the back of my head:

"They think they have erased my voice. They think I am defeated. They do not know that the end of their control is the beginning of my life."

I picked up a gold fountain pen and wrote the final entry on the very last page:

"The past is a phantom that only holds power when you look back in fear. I looked forward, I claimed my crown, and I built a kingdom where love is quiet, respect is absolute, and light reigns supreme. My name is Nina Vance, and I am finally home."

I closed the journal, resting it on the stone table beside my glass of wine.

From the garden below, Marcus was walking up the stone path, holding a bouquet of fresh wild lavender he had picked from the meadow. He smiled up at me, his eyes full of warmth and devotion.

"Ready to go inside, Nina?" Marcus asked, reaching out his hand to me. "The evening air is turning cool."

I looked down at his outstretched hand—a hand that had never sought to push me down, only to lift me higher.

I stepped down from the terrace, placing my hand firmly in his.

"I’m ready, Marcus," I said, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across my face as we walked together into the warm, glowing light of our home.

The doors closed quietly behind us, sealing out the dark forever.
