Chapter 10 - The Bright Kitchen

Two years later.
It was a warm Saturday morning in June. The sky over Chicago was a brilliant, cloudless blue, and the scent of blooming flowers drifted up from the parks along Michigan Avenue.
My Gold Coast condo was filled with sunshine.
In the kitchen, sunlight poured across the marble island, illuminating a massive glass bowl filled with fresh, bright organic strawberries, blueberries, and mangoes.
I sat at the counter in a soft linen dress, reviewing the quarterly report for The Emily Hale Financial Empowerment Foundation—a non-profit organization I had founded to help survivors of financial abuse and domestic control gain independence, secure legal representation, and rebuild their lives.
Over the past eighteen months, my foundation had helped over two hundred women break free from controlling partners, uncover hidden assets, and reclaim their freedom.
My phone chimed on the counter.
It was a message from my managing director at work, reminding me of our evening celebratory dinner at Alinea to mark the successful launch of our citywide transparency initiative.
I put the phone down, took a ripe strawberry from the bowl, and took a bite. It was sweet, fresh, and perfect.
There was no one standing behind me inspecting my purse.
There was no one telling me I wasn't worth fresh food.
There was no secret drawer, no hidden lies, and no cruel mother-in-law lurking in the shadows of my home.
I stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Below me, the city stretched out in all its vibrant, beautiful glory—the blue waters of the lake, the gleaming skyscrapers, the bustling streets full of people living their lives.
I raised my coffee cup toward the bright horizon, taking a long, quiet breath of deep, unburdened peace.

My past was a closed ledger. My present was full of light.
And my future was entirely my own.
