Chapter 6 - The Annulment Hearing

Three weeks later, the final scene of our legal battle took place inside the quiet, grand courtroom of the County Family Division.

The morning sun filtered through the high stained-glass windows, casting long blue and gold beams across the polished oak pews.

I sat at the petitioner’s table beside Harrison Vance. I was calm, collected, holding a small silver pen in my hand.

Across the room sat Scott and Bernice.

They looked like broken shadows of the people who had stood in my living room three weeks ago. Scott was wearing a cheap, off-the-rack suit his public defender had secured for him. Bernice was sitting rigidly beside him, wearing a plain black dress, her face devoid of makeup, her eyes staring blankly at the floorboards.

Judge Margaret Davis, a stern, grey-haired woman known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic financial abuse, sat behind the high judicial bench.

She reviewed the thick stack of evidence submitted by Harrison Vance: bank statements, corporate audit logs, the security footage from the Grand Regent Hotel, and the affidavits from the Oak Ridge bus driver regarding the destruction of my father's food.

Judge Davis lowered her reading glasses and looked down at Scott.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Davis spoke, her voice ringing clearly through the silent courtroom. "In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such calculated, deceitful financial exploitation. You married a woman under the false pretense of emotional commitment, while systematically siphoning her private wealth to fund a lavish lifestyle for yourself and your mother."

Scott opened his mouth to speak, but his court-appointed attorney gently touched his arm, shaking his head.

"The court finds abundant evidence of material fraud from the inception of this union," Judge Davis continued, taking her pen. "The marriage between Caroline Sterling and Scott Vance is hereby declared NULL AND VOID ab initio. It is legally erased as if it never occurred."

Bernice let out a low, choked gasp, but kept her head down.

"Furthermore," Judge Davis added, bringing her sharp gaze to rest on Bernice, "under the civil fraud petition, Mr. Scott Vance and Mrs. Bernice Vance are ordered to pay full financial restitution in the amount of four hundred and twenty thousand dollars to the Sterling Estate. The criminal fraud charges regarding the credit card misuse will proceed to trial next month."

BANG.

The judge’s wooden gavel struck the block with a sharp, final thunderclap.

"Court is adjourned."

I stood up, smoothing my coat, and looked across the courtroom one last time. Scott looked up at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, lingering plea for forgiveness—a man who had traded a life of real love and unlimited wealth for three years of fake status and cheap tequila.

I didn't say a word. I turned my back on them and walked through the double doors into the bright, warm afternoon sun.
