Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE GATE

Outside, the lead enforcer—a tall, heavily built man with a scarred neck named Hector—was fitting a pair of steel bolt cutters onto the heavy padlock of the estate’s iron gate.
"Cut it!" Hector ordered his men. "The boss wants the keys to this place before nightfall!"
SNAP.
The lock fell to the pavement.
Hector pushed the iron gate open and stepped into the courtyard, followed by three men holding iron bars.
Before they could take three steps across the stone driveway, the heavy wooden front door opened.
Mariana stepped out onto the porch alone. She wasn't holding a gun. She was holding a tablet computer connected to a encrypted satellite terminal, and she wore a plain black tactical windbreaker with an official federal seal pinned to her collar.
"You are trespassing on a protected federal intelligence property," Mariana said calmly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet courtyard. "Step back outside the gate immediately."
Hector laughed loudly, spitting on the stone driveway. "Listen to me, lady. We don't care about your fancy coat. Ricardo Aranda owes thirty million pesos to Inversiones Coyoacán. This house is collateral. We take the house, or we take you. Now get out of the way!"
Hector stepped forward, reaching out a heavy hand to grab her collar.
With lightning speed, Mariana stepped inside his guard, grabbed his outstretched wrist, twisted his arm downward, and drove her elbow directly into his collarbone.
CRACK.
Hector let out a agonizing scream as his shoulder dislocated. He dropped to his knees on the concrete, gasping for breath.
The other three men froze in absolute shock, holding their iron bars in mid-air.
Mariana didn't even lose her balance. She stood over Hector, placing her heel firmly against his chest, holding up her tablet screen.
"At 2:00 PM today, federal intelligence units executed simultaneous raids on five properties owned by Inversiones Coyoacán," Mariana stated coldly, tapping the screen. "Your boss, Sergio Ramirez, was arrested at his office in Santa Fe fifteen minutes ago for extortion, money laundering, and treason."
Hector’s eyes widened in sheer terror as he looked at the live video feed on the tablet showing his boss being led away in handcuffs by masked special forces officers.
"Your company no longer exists," Mariana continued, lowering her foot. "The fake mortgage Ricardo signed has been seized as evidence in a federal racketeering case. If you and your men are still standing on my driveway in ten seconds, you will spend the next twenty years in a federal prison."
The three enforcers dropped their iron bars onto the driveway with loud metallic clatters. Without saying a word, they grabbed their groaning leader, dragged him out through the gate, scrambled into their trucks, and sped away down the street, tires screeching.
Commander Vega stepped out onto the porch, holding his radio, a slow, appreciative smile on his face. "I forget sometimes that you were the top defensive instructor at the academy, Mariana."

"They threatened my son's home, Arturo," Mariana said softly, buttoning her jacket. "They were lucky I was in a good mood."
She turned back into the house, closing the heavy wooden door behind her.
