Chapter 6 - THE BROKEN ALLIANCE

By Friday night, the tension inside 414 Elmridge Court had devolved into total war.
Without the ability to present a united front, Julian, Sarah, and Evelyn turned on each other like trapped animals.
Sarah, terrified of the impending IRS investigation and the threat of CPS involvement before her baby was even born, packed three large suitcases and demanded that Julian take her to her parents' house in New Jersey.
"I am not going to prison for you and your psychotic mother!" Sarah screamed at Julian in the driveway, her voice carrying across the quiet neighborhood. "You lied to me! You told me you owned a share of this house! You're nothing but a broke freeloading loser!"
"Shut up, Sarah!" Julian yelled back, frantically trying to grab her luggage. "I'm trying to fix this! Uncle Richard is going to help us!"
"Uncle Richard called my father an hour ago!" Sarah cried out, slapping his hands away. "He said he’s pulling all legal funding because your brother has proof you committed felony tax fraud! It's over, Julian! You ruined everything!"
Sarah got into her father’s car, which had just pulled into the driveway, and sped away, leaving Julian standing alone in the dark driveway.
Inside the house, Evelyn sat in the dimly lit living room, clutching a glass of sherry, staring at the empty fireplace.
Julian slammed the front door shut and marched into the living room, his face dark with rage.
"This is your fault!" Julian screamed at his mother. "Why did you have to lock Emma out?! Why couldn't you just wait until David finished his house repairs?!"
Evelyn set her glass down with a sharp clack, her eyes flashing with venom. "How dare you speak to me like that! I did it for you! You and Sarah were complaining every single day that David and Emma were taking up the master suite!"
"You locked a kid outside in a rainstorm, Mom!" Julian yelled, pounding his fist against the mantelpiece. "Do you have any idea what the IRS is going to do to me?! They're going to seize my bank accounts! I could go to federal prison!"
"Then ask David for forgiveness!" Evelyn shouted back. "Go to his apartment, crawl on your knees, and beg him to drop the charges!"
"Me beg him?!" Julian laughed bitterly. "He hates me! He's hated me for eight years because Dad left him the trust instead of splitting it! David isn't going to stop until we're both broke on the street!"
Julian kicked an antique coffee table, shattering a glass vase onto the rug, before storming upstairs to his bedroom.
Evelyn sat alone in the quiet house, listening to the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. For the first time in eight years, the horrifying reality of her situation settled into her bones.
She had spent eight years ruling her family through guilt, entitlement, and emotional manipulation. She had favored Julian because he was weak and easy to control, while treating David—the son who paid her bills, fixed her roof, and protected her comfort—like an endless supply of free capital.
And now, the son she had discarded had stripped away her money, her legal protection, and her social standing.
Evelyn picked up her phone with a trembling hand, opened her contacts, and dialed my number.
I was sitting in our new home—the restoration on my house had finally been completed that afternoon. The living room was warm, filled with the clean smell of new hardwood floors and fresh paint. Emma was sitting at her new desk in her upstairs bedroom, happily organizing her school books.
I looked at the phone screen.
I didn't answer. I let it ring until it went to voicemail.
Ten seconds later, a notification popped up: 1 New Voicemail.
I clicked play.
"David..." Evelyn's voice sounded small, cracked, and completely stripped of its former majesty. "Please... call me back. Julian is gone. Sarah left him. The police came here today... David, please, I'm your mother. Don't throw me out. I have nowhere to go."
I listened to the message twice.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel triumph. I simply felt a quiet, profound sadness for a woman who had traded her family's love for pride, only to end up with neither.
I deleted the voicemail and closed my phone.
