Chapter 4 - The Gatehouse Press Conference

Friday, 2:00 PM.
The iron gates of Willowmere were flanked by two dozen television news vans, camera crews, and reporters holding microphones. The sun beat down on the historic stone walls, where white roses still bloomed in deceptive beauty.
Inside the security gatehouse, I stood beside my legal team and Marcus, adjusting the collar of my dark navy suit.
Through the window, I could see my mother standing on the front porch of the main mansion three hundred yards away, dressed in a sweeping black dress, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and Aunt Beatrice. She was playing the role of the tragic, persecuted matriarch to perfection, waiting for the cameras to capture her tearful plea.
At exactly 2:01 PM, I stepped through the pedestrian gate and walked up to the bank of microphones set up on the stone podium outside.
The reporters began shouting all at once.
"Mrs. Harcourt! Are you evicting your mother?!"
"Is it true you forced your father to sign over the deed on his deathbed?!"
"What about the allegations of emotional abuse?!"
I raised one hand, and the crowd gradually fell silent.
"Good afternoon," I said, my voice projecting clearly through the sound system. "Over the past forty-eight hours, several allegations have been made regarding the ownership of Willowmere and my motives regarding my mother, Evelyn Harcourt."
I gestured to Marcus, who stepped forward and began distributing thick press packets to every journalist present.
"In the packets being handed to you now," I continued, "you will find certified public records from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. You will see that in March of 2021, Willowmere was four days away from a sheriff’s auction due to unpaid mortgages and back taxes exceeding eight million dollars accumulated by my late father."
A rustle went through the press corps as reporters eagerly flipped open the binders, their eyes scanning the official court seals.
"You will also find receipts proving that I personally paid twelve million dollars to purchase the estate outright, preserving my family’s history," I stated. "And you will find an occupancy agreement allowing Evelyn Harcourt to live on this property rent-free, provided she adhered to basic standards of civil conduct."
A reporter from the Daily Chronicle raised her hand high. "Mrs. Harcourt! What led to the sudden decision to enforce the lease termination on Sunday?"
"My mother claims I am abusing her," I said smoothly. "I prefer to let the facts speak for themselves. Please look at the digital screens set up beside the podium."
Marcus tapped a remote control. Two seventy-inch high-definition monitors mounted on the gatehouse wall flickered to life.
The video played with crystal-clear audio.
The high-society crowd beneath the glass pavilion was visible in pristine detail. The footage showed eight-year-old Emma carefully using her fork, sitting quietly alongside her brother. Then came Evelyn—marching over with a sneer, yanking the plate from my daughter's hands, and loudly declaring: "Adopted children eat in the kitchen. Family sits at the family table."
The reporters gasped in unison. Camera shutters clicked frantically as photojournalists scrambled to record the video playing on the screens.
"My daughter, Emma, was adopted four years ago," I said, my voice unyielding as steel. "She is my legal child, my heir, and a cherished member of this family. I spent three years hiding my mother's financial collapse to spare her dignity. But I will not allow my wealth or my property to finance a sanctuary for bigotry and child abuse."
The crowd of reporters broke into frantic shouting, but they were no longer looking at me with suspicion—they were turning their cameras toward the main house, where Evelyn stood on the porch.
She had watched the entire press conference on her phone.

Through the gates, we watched as Arthur Pendelton put his hands in his pockets and walked away from her. Aunt Beatrice stepped back into the house, slamming the front door behind her.
My mother stood entirely alone on the stone porch, exposed to the world not as a grand matriarch, but as a cruel, bankrupt bully whose terrible secret was now playing on every evening news channel in the country.
