Chapter 6 - The Bali Incident

While the legal battle raged in California, my sister Madison remained in Bali, entirely blissfully unaware that her golden fountain of unlimited funds had just been shut down at the source.
That changed on Wednesday afternoon.
I was sitting in my office at Bennett Development, reviewing the structural restoration plans for our Pebble Beach estate, when Ethan walked in holding an iPad, a small, amused smile playing on his lips.
"You might want to see this," Ethan said, placing the tablet on my desk.
On the screen was an Instagram Live broadcast stream that had gone viral across multiple luxury lifestyle blogs. The title read: “West Hollywood Socialite Madison Bennett Detained at Luxury Bali Resort over Declined AmEx.”
I hit play.
The video showed Madison standing in the open-air lobby of the five-star oceanfront resort in Seminyak, surrounded by her influencer friends, luggage stacked high on marble carts. She was wearing a silk resort dress and oversized designer sunglasses, screaming at a terrified resort manager while two local police officers stood nearby.
"What do you mean my card is declined?!" Madison’s voice shrieked through the phone speaker. "Do you have any idea who I am?! I am Madison Bennett! My father owns Bennett Development in San Francisco! Try the black card again!"
"Miss Bennett," the hotel manager said politely in crisp English. "We have tried the black card, the secondary corporate card, and the wire transfer authorization. All accounts associated with Sterling Holdings have been flagged by international banking authorities as frozen due to a federal court order in California. Your total bill for the villa, spa treatments, and private helicopter charters is eighty-four thousand dollars. We cannot allow you to leave the premises until it is paid."
"Call my mother!" Madison screamed, flailing her arms. "Call Eleanor Bennett right now!"
"We called your mother, Miss Bennett," one of the police officers interjected calmly. "Her personal lines are disconnected, and her home telephone is no longer in service."
The video cut off as the local authorities escorted a sobbing, hysterical Madison toward a security office to process her corporate debt hold.
I leaned back in my leather office chair, rubbing my temples. A year ago, seeing my sister in such a humiliating position would have filled me with guilt. I would have rushed to my bank, wired the money immediately, and apologized for letting her suffer.
Now, I felt only a profound sense of cosmic balance.
"Did you freeze the Sterling Holdings credit lines?" I asked Ethan.
"Evelyn executed the international asset freeze at noon yesterday," Ethan explained, taking a seat across from me. "Sterling Holdings was funded exclusively through unauthorized transfers from your trust. Since the trust is now under your sole authority, those corporate credit cards were technically stolen property. The bank had no choice but to terminate the accounts."
"What's going to happen to her?"
"Her father managed to liquidize a small private savings account he forgot he had to wire the hotel eighty-four thousand dollars to keep her out of a Indonesian jail," Ethan revealed. "She's currently on a commercial economy flight back to San Francisco."
I blinked. "Madison? Flying economy?"
"With a layover in Taipei," Ethan added dryly. "She lands at SFO at six o'clock tonight."
"And where is she going when she lands?" I asked. "Mom and Dad were evicted from the Pebble Beach house yesterday. They're currently staying in a two-bedroom rented apartment in Walnut Creek."
Ethan smiled softly, leaning across the desk to touch my hand. "She's going to learn what reality feels like, Claire. Something you've known your entire life."
At 7:30 PM that evening, as Ethan and I were preparing to leave the office, the elevator doors opened on the 40th floor.
Madison marched out.
She looked exhausted, her silk resort dress rumpled, her mascara smeared, dragging two massive designer suitcases behind her. Her face was contorted with absolute fury as she stormed past Brenda’s desk and threw open the doors to my office.
"Claire!" Madison screamed, her voice cracking with rage. "What the hell did you do to my cards?! I was detained by foreign police! I was forced to fly in coach next to a crying baby for twelve hours! Have you completely lost your mind?!"

I sat behind my desk, slowly signing the last page of a structural approval document, before capping my fountain pen and looking up at her.
"Hello, Madison," I said quietly. "Welcome back from Bali. How was the ocean-view yoga?"
