Chapter 6 - THE COURT OF FIRST INSTANCE

The state family courthouse was an imposing stone monolith with tall granite pillars, polished marble corridors, and heavy mahogany courtroom doors.
At 8:45 AM on Thursday morning, our team assembled outside Courtroom 302.
Clara Higgins stood beside Lucy, holding two thick leather briefcases packed with financial records, crime scene photos, and sworn affidavits.
Lucy looked stunning. We had gone shopping the afternoon before; she wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress, her dark hair pulled back into a neat chignon, her skin glowing with fresh energy. The butterfly bandage was gone from her lip, leaving only a faint pink line that looked less like a wound and more like a badge of honor.
I sat beside her on the wooden bench in a crisp dark grey suit, holding my silver-headed cane.
At the far end of the hallway, a heavy set of double doors swung open.
Adrian Vance walked in, flanked by his mother Eleanor and his lead corporate counsel, Arthur Vance.
Adrian was dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, his hair slicked back, trying his best to look like a grieving, respectable husband. But beneath his eyes were dark purple circles, and his right wrist was wrapped in a thick white tensor bandage—a silent testament to the door he had tried to break down.
When his eyes locked onto Lucy, his jaw tightened. He took a step toward us, his mouth opening as if to issue another quiet, controlling command.
Thomas and David stepped out from behind our bench instantly, their massive frames forming an impenetrable wall of muscle between Adrian and Lucy.
Arthur Vance quickly grabbed his client's arm, pulling him back. "Control yourself, Adrian," the lawyer hissed under his breath. "The judge is already reviewing the arrest video."
At 9:00 AM sharp, the courtroom doors opened, and we were escorted inside.
The Honorable Judge Evelyn Harris took her seat at the high mahogany bench. She was a stern, sharp-featured woman in her sixties with keen blue eyes that scanned the courtroom like a hawk searching for prey.
"Case number 2026-FA-408," the clerk announced. "Vance versus Vance. Emergency Temporary Protective Order and Temporary Custody Hearing."
Arthur Vance stood up immediately, smoothing his suit jacket.
"Your Honor," Arthur Vance began, his voice booming with polished theatrical confidence. "My client, Mr. Adrian Vance, is a respected commercial property manager and devoted father. What occurred two days ago was a tragic domestic misunderstanding brought on by extreme emotional distress. My client’s wife, Lucinda, suffers from severe postpartum paranoia and abandoned their marital residence without notice, taking their infant son. Mr. Vance was merely trying to locate his child when an overly aggressive neighbor escalated the situation."
Judge Harris didn't even look up from her paperwork. "Is that so, Mr. Vance?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Arthur Vance continued smoothly. "Mrs. Vance has no income, no employment history for three years, no stable housing, and no financial capability to support a child. We request an immediate order returning minor child Liam to the marital home under the temporary care of his grandmother, Eleanor Vance, pending psychological evaluation of the mother."
He sat down, looking extremely pleased with himself.
Judge Harris then turned her gaze toward our table. "Ms. Higgins?"
Clara Higgins stood up calmly, adjusting her glasses. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't need to.
"Your Honor," Clara said, "I offer into evidence Exhibit A: the certified police report detailing Mr. Vance’s arrest for felony burglary, domestic assault, and destruction of property. Exhibit B: the high-definition audio recording of Mr. Vance threatening to kill his wife while attempting to kick down a reinforced door. Exhibit C: the medical examination records of Lucinda Vance showing documented physical trauma consistent with ongoing physical abuse."
Clara walked over to the court clerk, handing over a thick stack of papers.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Clara continued, her voice growing sharper, "regarding the defense counsel’s claim that my client has no financial means... I submit Exhibit D: an emergency petition for asset freeze and spousal support."
Arthur Vance leaped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! This is a custody hearing, not a financial discovery proceeding!"
"Overruled," Judge Harris stated sternly. "I will hear the financial motion."
Clara smiled faintly. "Your Honor, yesterday afternoon, working alongside the state financial crimes unit, we uncovered three hidden offshore accounts registered under 'Vance Capital LLC' in Delaware. Mr. Adrian Vance has been secretly transferring joint marital funds into these accounts to conceal them from his wife. The total balance of these concealed funds exceeds seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
Adrian’s face went completely white. He whipped his head around to look at his lawyer, his eyes wide with absolute panic.
Eleanor Vance gasped loudly from the gallery, her manicured hands clutching her pearl necklace in horror.
"In light of this massive financial fraud," Clara concluded, "we request an immediate temporary support order of twelve thousand dollars per month, full exclusive possession of the joint marital funds, immediate surrender of Mr. Vance’s passport, and a permanent protective order prohibiting Mr. Vance from coming within fifteen hundred feet of Lucinda Vance, Liam Vance, and Mrs. Evelyn Miller."
Judge Harris looked down from her high bench, her eyes fixing onto Adrian Vance like two laser beams.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Harris said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying quietness. "Do you have any response to the audio recording where you told your wife she wouldn't make it past the lobby alive?"
Adrian swallowed hard, his throat dry, his tongue completely paralyzed. "I... I was angry, Your Honor... I didn't mean—"
"Silence," Judge Harris cut him off instantly. She picked up her heavy wooden gavel.
"The Court finds overwhelming evidence of extreme domestic violence, emotional torture, and deliberate financial fraud," Judge Harris declared, her voice echoing off the courtroom walls. "The Emergency Protective Order is hereby granted for a period of one full year. Sole legal and physical custody of minor child Liam Vance is awarded exclusively to Lucinda Vance. Supervised visitation for the father is denied indefinitely pending criminal trial."
CRACK!
The gavel slammed down onto the wooden block like a gunshot.
"Furthermore," Judge Harris added, pointing her pen at Adrian, "all accounts associated with Vance Capital LLC are frozen immediately by court order. Mr. Vance is ordered to surrender his passport to the clerk within one hour. Court is adjourned."
Lucy let out a gasp of pure, unadulterated joy, burying her face in her hands as tears flooded down her cheeks. Clara turned to her, wrapping her in a warm, victorious embrace.
At the opposing table, chaos erupted. Eleanor Vance was screaming at Arthur Vance, while Adrian collapsed back into his leather chair, staring at his bandaged wrist in total, unmitigated ruin.
I stood up slowly, leaning on my cane. I looked across the well of the courtroom at Adrian Vance.
May you like
He looked back at me—no longer the powerful, terrifying husband who controlled every breath his wife took, but a small, broken boy facing the cold, unyielding wall of justice.
I didn't say a word. I simply offered him a gentle, polite nod, turned on my heel, and walked out into the bright marble hallway alongside my family.
