“She’s been difficult again?” she asked lightly.
I didn’t answer immediately.

The moment her mother spoke—
Lumi’s shoulders dropped half an inch.
Not fear.
Conditioning.
“I think she needs consistency,” Maris added.
That word again.
Consistency.
A beautiful word people use to justify control.
After breakfast, Maris left early.
And for the first time, Lumi didn’t wait for her to disappear fully before speaking.
She leaned toward me.

And whispered:
“Do you get in trouble if you tell the truth?”
My throat tightened.
“No,” I said gently. “Not with me.”
She studied my face for a long time.
Then slowly reached into her backpack.
Her fingers shook.
She pulled out the folded medical papers.
And placed them in my hands.
“I’m not supposed to have this,” she whispered.
My heart stopped.
Because I already knew what I was holding.
But I opened it anyway.

And everything I thought I understood about my marriage—
shifted.
