Chapter 10 - The Garden of Light

Two years later.
The warm sun shone brightly over a beautiful green garden in the quiet countryside near Tepotzotlán.
Children were running through the grass, playing tag under the shade of massive pecan trees. In the center of the garden stood a long wooden table covered with white tablecloths, fresh yellow flowers, delicious food, and cold drinks.
Today was Mateo’s third birthday.
He ran across the lawn in a clean navy blue shirt and little khaki shorts, laughing loudly as he kicked a soccer ball toward Don Rubén, who was sitting comfortably in an armchair under an umbrella, cheering him on.
Mariana stood near the food table, looking radiant, healthy, and deeply at peace. She was now a certified child guidance counselor working with young mothers in low-income communities, helping women recognize signs of domestic abuse and protecting vulnerable children across the state.
I walked up behind her, gently wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" I whispered.
Mariana turned her head, resting her cheek against mine, her eyes watching our son kick the ball into the grass.
"I was thinking about that morning in the emergency room," Mariana spoke softly, her voice free of any lingering pain. "When the doctor said 'Call the police,' I thought our life was over. I thought the darkness was going to swallow us whole."
She turned in my arms, looking up into my eyes with infinite love and clarity. "But that doctor wasn't calling the police to break us, Diego. She was calling them to set us free."
I smiled, pulling her closer, pressing a warm kiss against her forehead. "And now we are free."
"Daddy! Mommy! Look!" Mateo shouted, running over to us with his cheeks bright red, holding a large yellow dandelion he had plucked from the grass.
He held the flower up to Mariana with a magnificent, toothy smile. "For you, Mommy! Because you’re beautiful!"
Mariana dropped to her knees, gathering our son into a tight, warm hug, kissing his cheeks until he giggled hysterically. I knelt down beside them, wrapping my arms around both of my treasures, holding them close under the warm, golden sunlight.

There were no more lies. No more toxic control. No more fear behind locked doors.
Standing together in that garden of light, surrounded by true friends and boundless love, I knew that our family’s story was no longer defined by the cruelty that had tried to destroy us, but by the unbreakable love that had saved us all.
