Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

After dinner, as the guests gathered in the living room around the roaring stone fireplace to enjoy coffee and dessert, Adrian took my hand and led me through the glass French doors out onto the private terrace overlooking the quiet garden.

The night air was cold and clear, dusting the garden bushes with a soft winter frost.

Central Park stretched out in the distance under a vast, dark sky sprinkled with brilliant silver stars.

Adrian pulled his coat around my shoulders, standing behind me, wrapping his arms around me to shield me from the autumn chill.

"Warm enough?" he whispered softly against my ear.

"I'm perfect," I said, leaning back against him, looking out at the city lights twinkling through the trees.

I reached into my handbag, pulling out a small, worn photograph that I had found inside my grandmother Evelyn's old leather bible earlier that week.

It was a picture of me when I was seven years old, sitting on a wooden bench in Grandmother Evelyn's garden, holding a bouquet of yellow dandelions, smiling brightly at the camera without a single trace of fear or doubt in my eyes.

On the back of the photograph, in Evelyn's sharp, elegant script, were written six words:

“To my Claire: Never let them hide your light.”

I traced my fingers softly over her handwriting.

"She knew," I whispered softly.

"She always knew," Adrian agreed gently, resting his chin on my head. "She knew who you were going to become."

Adrian gently turned me around in his arms so I was facing him.

He looked down into my eyes with a love so pure, so fierce, and so absolute that it made my breath catch in my throat.

He reached into his inner coat pocket, pulling out a small, dark velvet box.

My heart skipped a beat, then began to thump in a fast, beautiful rhythm.

Adrian dropped smoothly onto one knee on the stone terrace, opening the velvet box under the soft glow of the garden lights.

Inside sat a breathtaking vintage emerald-cut diamond ring, set in platinum, sparkling like compressed starlight.

"Claire Evelyn Miller," Adrian said, his deep voice thick with emotion, his eyes locked onto mine. "You walked into my life during a storm, and you became my home. You are the bravest, smartest, and most magnificent woman I have ever known. I want to spend every morning, every holiday, and every quiet moment of my life standing by your side."

He smiled—a soft, breathtaking smile.

"Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over my lashes, catching the light like tiny diamonds.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," I whispered, my voice rich with joy. "Yes, Adrian. A thousand times yes."

Adrian stood up, his face radiating pure happiness, sliding the ring onto my finger. He pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly off my feet as he kissed me deeply under the starry autumn sky.

The ring fit perfectly—solid, timeless, and bright.

I looked out over the twinkling horizon of Manhattan.

The girl who had been uninvited from Thanksgiving was gone.

In her place stood a woman who had built her own table, gathered her own family, and walked out into the light—a light that no one, ever again, would be able to dim.
