Chapter 4 - The Legal Vanguard

The next morning, I sat in the glass-walled office of Julian Vance—no relation to the corrupt psychiatrist or the detective, but the most feared family law attorney in Southern California. He was a man who charged a thousand dollars an hour, money I didn't have. But Julian had taken my call after Sarah sent him a snippet of the cracked phone's audio.

Julian listened to the full four-minute recording in absolute silence. He was a man in his late fifties, with sharp silver hair and an impeccable tailored suit. When the tape finished, he took off his glasses and looked at me.

"Your family isn't just cruel, Miss Whitman," Julian said softly. "They are tactically arrogant. They believe their wealth makes them invisible. That arrogance is going to be their downfall."

"Can you get my daughter back?" I asked, my voice cracking. "They're changing her name. They're telling her I'm dead."

"What they did in family court yesterday was a desperate rush to establish a legal shield," Julian explained, leaning forward. "They used a corrupt doctor to get a temporary ex-parte order. But an ex-parte order requires a full evidentiary hearing within fourteen days. That is our battlefield. We are not going to fight this in the shadows. We are going to turn that family court into a theater of execution."

"But Natalie said they can get the tape thrown out," I said, fear clutching my chest.

Julian smiled, a cold, predatory expression. "They could, if we were trying to introduce it through standard criminal channels where the chain of custody can be argued by high-priced defense lawyers for months. But in family court, the standard of proof is different. The judge's primary concern is the immediate best interest and physical safety of the child. I am going to file a counter-petition for the immediate return of the child, citing attempted homicide and kidnapping. I will introduce this audio as emergency electronic evidence."

He tapped the table. "Furthermore, I am going to subpoena the cell phone tower records from Furnace Creek. If your father's phone pings match the exact timestamp of your burner phone's recording, their 'hearsay' argument vanishes into thin air. We are going to let them walk into that courtroom thinking they are going to finalize their theft. And then, we are going to expose the monsters behind those church smiles."

"Thank you," I wept, covering my face.

"Don't thank me yet, Claire," Julian said grimly. "For the next two weeks, you need to stay in a secure safe house. Your father is going to realize that you aren't backing down, and when wealthy men get desperate, they stop using lawyers and start using muscle."
