Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

Three years later.
It was Christmas Eve. A gentle, soft snowfall was dusting the pine trees outside, creating a picture-perfect winter wonderland.
Inside the living room on Oakridge Lane, the fireplace crackled merrily, casting a golden, flickering light across the hardwood floor.
Four-year-old Owen and two-year-old Grace were sitting on the thick rug near the tree, unwrapping colorful boxes of toys, their excited laughter filling the house.
A giant Christmas tree stood near the window, decorated with twinkling lights, handmade ornaments, and a silver star at the very top.
Above the fireplace mantel hung our family portrait, flanked by my military commendation medals and the emerald ring box preserved in a glass display.
I sat on the comfortable leather sofa, wearing a warm sweater, holding a cup of hot chocolate.
Hannah sat beside me, snuggled under a soft fleece blanket, her head resting comfortably against my chest.
Outside, a car drove past slowly, its headlights sweeping across the snow-covered lawn before fading into the quiet night.
"Jake?" Hannah murmured softly, looking up at me through the dim, golden firelight.
"Yeah, baby?"
"Do you ever think about them?" she asked softly, referring to Walter, Patricia, and Logan.
I looked into the roaring fire, listening to the peaceful sound of my children playing with their toys.
"Sometimes," I answered honestly. "I send them photos of Owen and Grace every holiday. I want them to know their grandchildren are happy and safe. But their path was their own choice, Hannah. We chose ours."
"And what is our path?" she asked with a tender smile.
I leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips—a slow, deep kiss carrying years of shared hardship, triumph, and devotion.
"Our path is right here," I whispered against her cheek. "In this house. With these children. In a place where the door is always open, the fire is always burning, and love never ends."
Owen ran over, clutching a new wooden train set, dropping it onto my lap. "Dad! Look! The train goes super fast!"
"Show me, buddy!" I laughed, swinging him up onto the sofa beside us while Grace toddled over to climb onto Hannah’s lap.
As the snow fell peacefully outside the window, wrapping the world in a quiet white blanket, our family sat together by the warm hearth—safe, whole, and completely at peace.
