Chapter 3 - The Family Council

By Friday evening, the story of the Vance family implosion had spread like wildfire through their social circle.
Inside the quiet, oak-paneled dining room of the prestigious St. Claire Club in downtown San Francisco, a private emergency family meeting had been called.
Sitting around a long mahogany table were Richard’s two older brothers—Uncle Charles, a retired appellate judge with a terrifyingly sharp mind, and Uncle Marcus, a wealthy commercial real estate developer—along with Aunt Beatrice, the formidable matriarch of the extended Vance clan.
Richard, Elaine, Vanessa, and Tyler sat at one end of the table like defendants in a courtroom.
Charles set his gold-rimmed reading glasses on the table and looked at his younger brother, Richard, with deep disappointment.
"Let me understand this correctly, Richard," Charles began, his voice dry and measured. "You went to Julian’s personal residence on Tuesday evening, demanded that he cover a one-hundred-and-forty-thousand-dollar shortfall for Vanessa's wedding, threatened to disown him if he refused, and permitted Vanessa to call him 'disgusting' in his own home?"
Richard shifted uncomfortably in his leather chair. "Charles, you don't understand how arrogant Julian has become! He sits on his multi-million-dollar company and looks down on us! He refused to help his own sister! We are his family!"
"He gave Vanessa fifteen thousand dollars six months ago, did he not?" Aunt Beatrice interrupted, her sharp, dark eyes fixed on Vanessa.
Vanessa looked down at her fingernails. "That... that was for essential preparations, Aunt Beatrice..."
"Essential preparations?" Beatrice scoffed, pulling a printed financial sheet from her purse. "I spoke with Grand Oaks Estate's accounting office this morning after Elaine called me begging for a loan. That fifteen thousand dollars went toward a luxury helicopter ride from SFO to Napa and a private yacht charter for Tyler's bachelor party!"
Tyler winced, drawing his head down between his shoulders.
"You lied to your brother," Beatrice continued, her tone icy. "You took his hard-earned money, spent it on frivolous luxury, and then had the audacity to bring your parents to his house to extort more from him?"
"He can afford it!" Elaine burst out defensively, wringing her silk handkerchief. "Beatrice, Julian makes millions! He owns three commercial warehouses! What is a hundred thousand dollars to him?! It's nothing! But to Vanessa, it’s her special day! A mother has a right to expect her successful son to support his family!"
Uncle Marcus, who had remained quiet until now, let out a harsh, bitter laugh.
"A right, Elaine?" Marcus asked, leaning forward. "Do you know what Julian was doing when he was twenty-four years old while Vanessa was spending forty thousand dollars a year on a liberal arts degree that she never used?"
Elaine went quiet.
"He was working eighteen-hour shifts in the winter rain," Marcus stated, pointing a finger at Richard. "He was driving an eighteen-year-old pickup truck with a broken heater, living on canned soup, and sleeping on a cot in his first rented garage while he built Apex piece by piece! Did you give him a loan when his first crane broke down, Richard? Did you help him pay his workers when his primary contractor defaulted in 2018?"
Richard swallowed hard, his face pale. "I... I gave him advice..."
"You told him he was a fool for dropping out of college to go into trade labor!" Marcus countered harshly. "You told everyone at the country club that Julian was the 'working-class child' while you bragged about Vanessa’s social connections! And now, when his hard work has made him wealthy, you treat him like a credit card that you are entitled to swipe whenever your vanity demands it!"
Silence descended over the dining room.
Vanessa began to cry—not tears of genuine remorse, but the hysterical, desperate tears of someone whose safety net had been yanked away.
"Uncle Charles, please," Vanessa begged, turning to the retired judge. "The wedding is in three weeks! The venue is going to cancel our date tomorrow at five o'clock! We’ll lose everything! Can't you talk to Julian? Can't you convince him to just loan us the money? I’ll pay him back! I promise!"
Charles picked up his glasses, placed them back in his pocket, and stood up from the table.
"Julian is a grown man, Vanessa," Charles said coldly. "He built a legal wall around himself because you treated his generosity as weakness. If you want Julian to help you, you will not send lawyers, you will not send threats, and you will not send your parents to scream at his security guards."

Charles looked down at Richard and Elaine with complete disgust.
"If I were Julian," Charles added as he pulled on his overcoat, "I wouldn't just disown you. I would have filed criminal extortion charges the moment you stepped onto my property. Good evening."
