Chapter 9 - A Sanctuary Built with Love

By the spring of the following year, I decided it was time to make a big change.

The large house in the suburbs—with its echoing empty rooms and memory-filled hallways—was too big for one person. With the blessing of Margaret and Arthur, I placed the house on the market and purchased a beautiful, historic farmhouse situated on twenty acres of rolling green hills in the Virginia countryside.

We turned the property into The Miller Haven—a retreat center funded by the foundation where families recovering from traumatic loss could come to stay for free, surrounded by nature, counselors, and supportive community.

We built a large community garden, a quiet library filled with children’s books, and a grand wooden playground sitting beneath a grove of ancient maple trees.

On the day of the retreat's grand opening, Margaret and Arthur moved into a cozy guest cottage on the property, taking on the roles of resident caretakers and surrogate grandparents to every grieving family that walked through our gates.

That evening, after the opening guests had left, I walked through the quiet gardens of the haven.

The air was soft and fragrant with blooming honeysuckle. In the distance, I could hear the gentle rustling of the maple leaves in the evening wind.

Arthur was sitting on the front porch of his cottage, whittling a piece of wood, while Margaret tended to a bed of bright yellow roses near the porch steps.

I walked up to the porch and sat down on the wooden swing, swinging gently back and forth.

"You look peaceful tonight, Claire," Margaret said, stepping up onto the porch and handing me a cup of chamomile tea.

"I am, Margaret," I said, looking out over the rolling green hills lit by the golden rays of the setting sun. "For a long time, I thought my life ended on Interstate 95. I thought I was just a ghost left behind."

"You weren't left behind, sweetheart," Margaret said softly, wrapping her warm arm around my shoulders. "You were left to be their voice. And you've spoken so loudly that the whole world had to listen."
