Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

Panic erupted in the living room.
My mother shrieked, dropping her handkerchief. Ashley froze, her phone slipping out of her fingers onto the carpet. My father took two steps back, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the federal badge.
"Agent Thomas... there must be a mistake," Dad stammered, his confident billionaire persona crumbling into dust. "My house was burgled yesterday! I'm the victim here!"
"You're not the victim, Mr. Vance," Agent Thomas said coolly, stepping into the living room as four uniformed officers moved past him into the hallway. "Yesterday afternoon, your business partner, Richard Hayes, turned himself in to federal authorities."
My father let out a soft, choked breath. "He... he turned himself in?"
"Mr. Hayes brought us the complete financial ledgers he retrieved from your safe yesterday," Agent Thomas explained. "Ledgers that show you’ve spent the last six years embezzling over $12 million from your client retirement funds into shell accounts in the Cayman Islands. Mr. Hayes realized you were setting him up to take the fall, so he decided to secure the evidence himself and strike a immunity deal."
I stared at my father in complete horror.
Embezzlement. $12 million. Stealing from client retirement funds.
This wasn't just corporate greed; this was a massive, life-destroying crime. The extravagant lifestyle, the beach houses, Ashley's luxury cars, the private college tuition—it was all funded by stolen money from hardworking people's pensions.
"Dad..." Ashley whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at him with wide, terrified eyes. "Tell them it's not true. Tell them we're rich!"
My father couldn't answer. He slumped into an armchair, burying his face in his hands, completely broken.
Agent Thomas turned his attention to me. "Are you Lauren Vance?"
"Yes," I said quietly.
"Miss Vance, we reviewed the security footage provided by the neighbor's doorbell camera," Agent Thomas said, his tone softening significantly. "We saw that you left the property at 5:00 AM two days ago, long before Mr. Hayes arrived. Your phone records also confirm you were across town. You are not a suspect in this financial scheme."
"I have nothing to do with my father's business," I stated clearly. "I run my own independent freelance graphic design consultancy. Every dollar I have was earned legally."
"We know," Agent Thomas nodded. "However, as part of the asset forfeiture seizure order, this house, all associated vehicles, and accounts under Arthur and Eleanor Vance's names are being frozen immediately."
My mother began wailing hysterically. "Frozen?! Where are we supposed to live?! What about our clothes?! What about our life?!"
Agent Thomas showed no emotion. "You have two hours to pack personal clothing. Everything else is subject to state seizure."
Ashley ran over to me, grabbing my coat sleeve, her face stained with ruined makeup. "Lauren! Please! You have an apartment, right?! You can take us in! You have to help us!"
I looked down at my sister's desperate, tear-streaked face.
For my entire life, she had walked over me, belittled my work, mocked my independence, and treated me like trash. And now, in her moment of ruin, she expected me to open my doors and carry her weight once again.

I slowly, firmly reached down and unclasped her fingers from my coat.
"No, Ashley," I said softly, repeating the same word I had spoken across the dining table two days ago. "Someone has to stay behind and take responsibility. That's your role now."
