Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Thread

The sun began its slow descent into the Pacific Ocean, casting a breathtaking display of violet, gold, and crimson light across the sky.
The party guests had gradually departed, leaving only the soft hum of the evening breeze rustling through the olive trees on the terrace.
Noah came sitting beside me on the wide stone bench overlooking the ocean, leaning his head against my shoulder. He smelled like grass, sunshine, and warm summer air.
“Mom?” Noah murmured softly, his hand finding mine and sliding his small fingers into my palm—the exact same gesture he had used in room 412 two years ago.
“Yes, sweetie?” I answered, kissing the top of his head.
“Are we always gonna be this happy?”
I wrapped my arm around his shoulders, pulling him close against my side, feeling the steady, strong, rhythmic beat of his heart against my ribs.
A heart that was beating because a stranger chose kindness.
A heart that was beating because a mother refused to give up.
“Yes, Noah,” I said, my voice strong, certain, and full of unshakeable love. “We are. Because nobody can ever hurt us again.”
In the distance, down near the iron gates of the estate, a small, battered silver sedan drove slowly past the stone walls.
Inside sat my father and mother.
They didn't stop. They didn't honk. They didn't call.
They simply looked through the tinted windows at the sunlit estate, at the grand glass house, at the healthy boy playing on the lawn, and at the daughter they had traded for a deposit on a wedding that never happened.
They drove away into the gathering dusk, vanishing like shadows before the dawn.
I didn't watch them go.

I kept my eyes fixed on the sunset, holding my son close, listening to the sweetest sound in the entire world:
The steady, unbroken beat of my son’s living heart.
