Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Bank

At 11:45 AM, the main branch of First National Bank in downtown was bustling with lunchtime crowds.

Julian Vance sat in a private glass-walled office on the second floor, sipping an espresso, looking down at his watch with an expression of supreme confidence.

The glass door opened.

I walked in, wearing Dr. Carr’s sleek black wool coat, my hair pulled back into a high, professional ponytail, holding a leather briefcase in my right hand. Behind me came Marcus Sterling, carrying a thick binder of financial documents.

Julian raised an eyebrow, setting his espresso cup down. "Miss Walker. I see you brought your accountant. Did you bring my ninety thousand dollars?"

"I brought something better, Mr. Vance," I said, taking a seat across from him without waiting for an invitation.

Marcus laid the briefcase flat on the desk, unlatched the silver locks, and swung the lid open.

Inside were not stacks of cash, but three thick stacks of red-labeled legal dossiers stamped with the seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division.

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What is this trash?"

"This 'trash' is the paper trail showing that your company, Vance Development, paid eighteen payments of two thousand dollars each to a bank account held by Savannah Walker over a period of eighteen months," I said, my voice smooth, calm, and utterly devoid of fear.

Julian's eyes flicked to Marcus, then back to me. "Savannah was a private consultant—"

"Savannah was a student who had access to confidential commercial bidding files at Walker Holdings," I interrupted. "Files that you used to undercut her father's business, force him into insolvency, and then charge him thirty percent interest rates through your illegal lending arm, Apex Capital."

Julian leaned back in his chair, his eyes darkening. "You think a few bank transfers are going to scare me, girl? My brother is the district councilman. Any indictment you try to file will sit on a desk in the prosecutor's office for six months."

"Your brother was the district councilman," Marcus corrected smoothly, pulling a live news stream up on his tablet and setting it on the desk between them.

On the screen, a press conference was taking place outside City Hall. Two FBI agents were leading Councilman Vance out of the building in handcuffs. The banner across the bottom of the screen read: DISTRICT COUNCILMAN ARRESTED IN FEDERAL EXTORTION AND RACKETEERING PROBE.

Julian's face drained of every drop of color. He stood up so fast his leather chair crashed into the glass window behind him.

"How..." Julian stammered, his polished arrogance evaporating instantly.

"Dr. Simona Carr isn't just the director of Future Scholars, Mr. Vance," I said, leaning forward and resting my elbows on his desk. "She sits on the board of trustees for the Federal Ethics Commission. When Marcus and I gave her the paper trail connecting Vance Development to Apex Capital three hours ago, she called the US Attorney directly."

Two tall men in dark grey suits pushed open the glass door of the office, flashing silver badges.

"Julian Vance," the lead agent announced. "You are under arrest for federal extortion, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit racketeering. Step away from the desk."

May you like

Julian stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, as the agents pulled his hands behind his back and clicked the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they led him past me, I picked up my briefcase, looked him dead in the eye, and said, "Business reality, Mr. Vance."
