Chapter 4 - The Threat at the Gates

By Friday morning, Willow Ridge felt less like a sanctuary and more like a fortress preparing for war.

I spent the morning in the sunlit kitchen with Clara, watching Hadley and Ruthie bake cinnamon rolls at the low granite island. For the first time in weeks, I heard Ruthie laugh—a bright, musical sound that made tears spill down my cheeks into my coffee mug.

At 11:00 a.m., a sleek silver sedan pulled up the driveway.

Out stepped Evelyn Vance—a tall woman in her late fifties with sharp gray hair, wearing an immaculate navy pinstripe suit and carrying a leather briefcase that looked heavy with legal precedent.

We spent three hours in Vincent’s library going over my testimony. Evelyn was precise, relentless, and fiercely protective. She documented every bruise, every incident, every date, and every dollar Trent had withheld from us.

"We are filing for an emergency temporary restraining order first thing Monday morning," Evelyn said, closing her notepad. "Combined with full physical and legal custody for Shelby, and an order granting her exclusive possession of the marital home."

"I don't want the house," I said quickly, shaking my head. "There are too many terrible memories in that place."

"You don't have to live there, Shelby," Vincent spoke up from his armchair by the window. "We sell the duplex, liquidate the equity, and use the proceeds to buy a home of your own. Somewhere safe. Somewhere with a garden for the girls."

Before I could answer, a sudden chime echoed through the house’s intercom system.

The security screen on Vincent’s desk flickered to life, displaying a live feed from the main gate at the bottom of the driveway.

A red pickup truck—Trent’s truck—was parked diagonally across the entrance, blocking the gate. Trent was standing on the hood of his vehicle, holding a heavy iron tire iron, screaming toward the security cameras mounted on the brick pillars.

"Moretti!" Trent’s muffled, rage-filled voice echoed through the outdoor speaker monitors. "Bring my wife out here! I know she’s in there, you rich scumbag! I called the state police! I reported my kids kidnapped!"

My face drained of all color. I grabbed the edge of the library table to steady myself. "He’s insane... he’s going to get himself shot!"

Vincent stood up slowly, completely unbothered. He buttoned his suit jacket with calm precision.

"Evelyn," Vincent said calmly to the lawyer. "Stay inside with Shelby and the children."

"Vincent," Evelyn warned, raising an eyebrow. "Do not do anything that gives his attorney leverage in court on Monday."

"I am merely going to welcome a guest to my property line, Evelyn," Vincent replied coolly.

He turned to me, his dark eyes steady. "Stay here, Shelby. This ends today."

Vincent walked out of the library, accompanied by his chief head of security, a towering man named Frank.

I couldn't just sit there. I walked over to the grand floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the front drive, clutching the curtains as I watched Vincent’s Lincoln descend the winding road toward the front gates.
