Chapter 4 - The Family Meeting Trap

Three days passed in intense, suffocating silence.

Rachel’s social media pages—which had once been filled daily with glossy photos of her posing by her white BMW, wearing luxury outfits, and geotagging expensive rooftop bars—had gone completely dark.

Then, on Thursday evening, the inevitable offensive began.

Uncle Robert—my mother’s older brother, a wealthy local real estate developer who had always been viewed as the grand patriarch of the Donovan family—called my personal phone.

"Emma," Uncle Robert said, his voice deep, booming, and heavy with manufactured patriarchal concern. "I am sitting here with your mother and your sister. They are in absolute pieces. Your mother is sick with anxiety, and Rachel has been unable to leave her bed for three days."

"Hello, Uncle Robert," I said, setting my laptop to record the call audio.

"This whole situation has gotten entirely out of hand," Uncle Robert continued, taking on his best corporate negotiator tone. "Your mother told me about the dispute over the car and the credit cards. Look, I understand you were hurt by some silly birthday prank—"

"It wasn't a prank, Uncle Robert," I interrupted sharply. "Rachel dumped an entire bag of wet kitchen trash over my head in front of six people while Mom told me to stop crying. And then Rachel called me a garbage can."

Uncle Robert paused for a fraction of a second, clearly surprised, but brushed it off instantly. "Sisterly banter can be crude, Emma. Rachel has a flamboyant personality! But taking legal action? Threatening your own flesh and blood with criminal fraud charges over money? That is not how the Donovan family handles problems!"

"How does the Donovan family handle problems, Uncle Robert?" I asked, my voice dripping with cold irony. "By letting my sister forge my signature to steal $28,000? By letting my mother drain $32,000 from my savings account?"

"Money comes and goes, Emma!" Uncle Robert raised his voice, adopting the harsh tone he used on his job sites. "You have a good software job! You make great money! Rachel is struggling to get her business off the ground! As the older, more stable sister, it is your responsibility to help her, not ruin her life with a police record!"

"I am not her mother, Uncle Robert. And I am not her cash register."

"We are having a family dinner at my house in Upper Arlington tomorrow night at 7:00 PM," Uncle Robert commanded. "You will bring your legal papers, we will sit down like civilized adults, and we will work out a sensible repayment plan that doesn't involve lawyers or courts. If you refuse to come, Emma, I will personally ensure the entire extended family knows that you turned your back on your own mother."

I looked at the formal demand letter sitting on my desk, signed by Ms. Reed. The seventy-two-hour deadline was set to expire at 5:00 PM tomorrow.

"I’ll be there, Uncle Robert," I said smoothly. "And don't worry. I’ll bring all the paperwork."

I hung up the phone and immediately called Ms. Reed.

"Ms. Reed," I said. "My uncle just invited me to a 'family reconciliation dinner' tomorrow night to pressure me into dropping the charges."

"Are you going?" Ms. Reed asked.

"Oh, I’m going," I replied. "But I’m not going alone. And I’m not bringing a white flag. I’m bringing a process server."
