Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNTING

The grand living room, which had once been the backdrop for lavish holiday parties and arrogant displays of wealth, felt like an interrogation room.
Richard tried to regain his footing, stepping forward with his shoulders back, attempting to project authority. "Maya... what is the meaning of this drama? Bringing lawyers into your parents' home? Bringing your son into a business matter?"
Maya looked down at Leo, smiling gently, before looking back up at her father. "Leo wanted to see the house one last time before the movers arrive."
"Movers?!" Lisa shrieked, bouncing off the couch. "You monster! You’re kicking our parents out of their home?!"
"I’m not kicking anyone out, Lisa," Maya replied smoothly. "The bank is. You see, when Father used my trust fund as collateral for your husband’s business, he also signed a secondary mortgage on this house to cover the legal fees of his failed real estate ventures five years ago. Once the trust was audited, the bank realized the collateral was fraudulently obtained. They recalled the loan."
Richard’s hands shook visible as he gripped the edge of the dining table. "Maya... I am your father. Everything I did, I did to preserve the family’s standing! To build a legacy for all of you!"
"No, Father," Maya said, her tone utterly devoid of heat. "You did it to preserve your standing. You sacrificed me years ago because I didn't fit into your neat little picture of status. When I got pregnant with Leo, you told me I was a disgrace. When I chose to work hard and raise him on my own, you treated me like a charity case."
"We invited you to Thanksgiving!" Eleanor cried out, tears streaming down her face. "We welcomed you into Lisa’s home!"
"You invited me so Lisa could have someone to look down upon," Maya corrected her instantly. "You needed a contrast to feel good about yourselves. Lisa had the mansion, the rich husband, the designer clothes. Maya was the poor, struggling single mother who should be grateful for the leftovers from your table."
Leo squeezed Maya’s hand. "Mommy, is Aunt Lisa going to hit me again?" he asked loudly enough for the whole room to hear. His voice was innocent, without malice, but the words hit the room like a sledgehammer.
Lisa flinched as if she had been slapped. "I... I didn't hit you! I was just angry about the vase!"
"You grabbed a six-year-old child hard enough to leave bruises, Lisa," Maya said, her eyes narrowing slightly, the only sign of the fiery anger beneath her calm exterior. "And then you struck him. And when he cried, you called him a brat and threw us out into the rain, calling us 'poor.'"
"It was an accident! I lost my temper!" Lisa sobbed, dropping her head into her hands. "David is losing his company! We’re going to lose our home! Isn't that enough punishment?!"
Attorney Sterling stepped forward, opening the black binder. "Mrs. Vance, the legal liabilities facing your family are not a matter of 'punishment.' They are a matter of law. Mr. Montgomery’s total unauthorized withdrawals from the Montgomery Senior Trust amount to $14.2 million over eight years."
Eleanor gasped, looking at her husband in horror. "Fourteen million?! Richard, what did you do with that money?!"
Richard couldn't answer. He collapsed heavily into a chair, staring at the floor, his grand image completely shattered.
"We are offering a settlement," Attorney Sterling continued. "Miss Montgomery has no desire to see her father spend the remainder of his life in federal prison."
A glimmer of hope washed over Lisa’s face. "You... you’re dropping the charges?"
"Under three strict conditions," Maya said, stepping forward.
"Anything!" Eleanor blurted out. "We’ll agree to anything, Maya!"
Maya looked at her family, one by one.
"First," Maya began, "all properties purchased using trust assets—including Lisa’s mansion and this estate—will be immediately surrendered to the trust. You will have thirty days to clear your personal belongings."
Lisa gasped, but David squeezed her shoulder, silently warning her not to speak.
"Second," Maya continued, "David’s firm will undergo a full restructuring under an independent board. He will step down as CEO, retaining a minor non-voting share, so the employees do not lose their jobs due to his fraud."
David closed his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Thank you, Maya... thank you."
"And third," Maya said, her voice turning as sharp as broken glass as she looked directly at Lisa and her parents.
"You will sign a legally binding non-disclosure and non-contact agreement. You will never approach my son again. You will never call him poor, you will never speak his name, and you will never enter his presence. If any of you violate this agreement, the full weight of the criminal fraud charges will be reinstated immediately."
Silence stretched across the room, heavy and absolute.
Lisa looked at her sister, seeing for the first time the woman Maya had truly become. Maya wasn't the weak, quiet girl they had pushed around for years. She was a mother who had built an impenetrable fortress around her child.
May you like
"Is that clear?" Maya asked softly.
Richard slowly raised his head, his face defeated and hollow. "It’s clear, Maya."
