Chapter 4 - The Audit of the Vance Empire

By Monday morning, the glittering social facade of the Vance family was not just cracking—it was actively turning to dust.
Inside the mahogany-paneled boardroom of Vance Enterprises downtown, a suffocating silence hung heavy in the air. Eleanor sat at the head of the long table, her hands trembling as she stared at the quarterly financial reports scattered before her. Opposite her sat Dominic, pale, hollow-eyed, and unshaven, looking every bit the broken man whose life had unraveled in less than forty-eight hours.
The heavy oak doors swung open without a knock.
Marcus Vance, the patriarch of the family and CEO of the firm, strode into the room, his face dark as a thundercloud. He slammed a heavy manila folder onto the table, the sound echoing sharply against the wood.
"Explain this," Marcus growled, his voice trembling with suppressed rage as he pointed a finger at Dominic. "Ten minutes ago, our primary commercial lenders—Bank of Manhattan and Sovereign Trust—called to freeze every single line of credit we have. Not just for the company, Eleanor. For our personal accounts, our real estate holdings, and the trust funds!"
"Freeze our credit?" Eleanor gasped, clutching her pearls. "On what grounds?! We have prime collateral! We’ve banked with them for thirty years!"
"On the grounds of an immediate forensic audit requested by Sterling Holdings!" Marcus roared, slamming his palms onto the table and leaning over it. "Do you have any idea who Arthur Sterling is?! I spent the last two hours trying to get a VP on the phone, only to be told that Sterling owns a controlling stake in our primary supply chain, and they’ve just initiated a hostile debt-call on our downtown commercial portfolio!"
Dominic sank lower into his leather chair, staring blankly at the polished table. "It's Vivienne..." he whispered.
"Vivienne?!" Marcus spun around, glaring at his son. "What does your penniless, charity-case wife have to do with Arthur Sterling?!"
"She’s not penniless, Dad," Dominic muttered bitterly, a humorless, broken laugh escaping his lips. "She’s not a charity case. She’s Arthur Sterling’s only daughter and sole heir. She hid her identity because she wanted someone who loved her for who she was, not her name. And I... I let Chloe and Mom treat her like trash for three years."
Eleanor’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled purple. "How were we supposed to know?! She wore off-the-rack dresses! She drove a modest sedan! She didn't act like a billionaire heiress!"
"Because she had class, Mother," Dominic snapped, finally finding a shred of backbone—though it came far too late to save anything. "Something this family wouldn't recognize if it bit us on the nose."
Before Marcus could scream another curse, his desk phone buzzed shrilly. With shaking fingers, he hit the speakerphone button.
"Mr. Vance," a cool, formal legal voice echoed through the boardroom. "This is lead counsel for Sterling Holdings. We are formally serving notice that our civil defamation lawsuit against Chloe Vance, along with the asset forfeiture proceedings against your corporate holdings, will proceed without settlement discussions. Furthermore, Vivienne Sterling-Vance has filed for full, sole custody of her unborn child, requesting a restraining order against you, your wife, and your son. Have a pleasant morning."

The line went dead.
Marcus slowly lowered himself into his chair, staring blankly at the wall as the reality of their utter destruction settled over the room like a tomb.
