Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail

The revelation hung in the air like ozone after a lightning strike.

Brayden, the older of my two nephews, stood up so fast his chair tipped backward and crashed onto the Persian rug. "You're lying! My dad bought me this SUV! He handed me the keys right in front of the entire country club last month!"

"Your dad handed you the keys, Brayden," I said, my tone remaining dangerously calm, "because the leasing contract was processed through a subsidiary vendor account managed by Apex Logistics. And as of three days ago, Apex Logistics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Horizon Technologies."

Chase, the younger brother, looked like he was about to throw up his roast chicken. He looked at his mother, his voice cracking with adolescent panic. "Mom? What is she talking about? What is Horizon Technologies?"

Vanessa didn't answer him. She was staring at me with a look of pure, unadulterated murderous hatred. If glares could kill, I would have been reduced to ash right there between the salad forks and the gravy boat.

"You hacked Richard's computer," Vanessa hissed, her voice shaking violently as she leaned across the table, ignoring her sons entirely. "You and that sanctimonious husband of yours spent weeks snooping through corporate databases like common criminals just to humiliate us!"

"We didn't have to hack anything, Vanessa," I replied, locking my phone screen and picking it up casually. "Liam didn't go looking for dirt. Liam is the senior regional director of compliance for Horizon Technologies. When his corporate division acquired Apex Logistics last month during their multi-million-dollar buyout, your husband’s little side hustle was the very first irregularity flagged by the automated fraud detection algorithm."

My mother, who had remained entirely silent at the far end of the table up until this point, pressed a linen napkin to her lips with trembling fingers. "Clara... is this true? Is Richard in legal trouble?"

"Mom," I said, turning my attention to the woman who had watched Vanessa mock my daughter's thrift-store jacket without saying a single word in defense. "Richard didn't just misplace a few petty cash receipts. He diverted over four hundred thousand dollars in corporate acquisition funds over the last eighteen months. Half of it went toward paying off his country club dues and maintaining your daughter's lavish socialite lifestyle. The other half?" I glanced at the two luxury car keys resting on the table. "Well, financing two luxury vehicles for teenagers who have never worked a single hour in their lives is an expensive hobby."

Arthur snatched the phone off the table, his old hands shaking as he scrolled through the multi-page financial ledger Liam had sent me that morning. His eyes scanned the wire transfers, the authorization signatures bearing Richard’s name, and the internal audit memos flagging unauthorized disbursements.

My father’s breathing grew shallow. He looked up, his face flushed with a mixture of rage and deep, humiliating embarrassment.

"Richard signed these," Arthur whispered, the words sounding like they were being dragged out of him by force. "He... he authorized corporate funds for personal asset acquisition."

"Not just asset acquisition, Dad," I added quietly. "Grand embezzlement. The federal compliance division of Horizon is already preparing the case file for the U.S. Attorney's office. Richard isn't just losing his job; he’s looking at a federal indictment."

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked sob and lunged across the table, trying to snatch the phone out of my father’s hands. "Give me that! It's forged! Clara, you witch, you planned this! You’ve always hated that we have money, that we live in the gated community, that Dad was proud of us!"

Emma finally lifted her head from my shoulder. Her eyes, usually so soft and hesitant, were wide and clear as she looked at her aunt.

"My jacket only cost twelve dollars, Aunt Vanessa," Emma said, her voice small but piercingly clear in the silent room. "At least nobody can put us in prison for wearing it."
