Chapter 3 - The Safe Haven

The private clinic in Tribeca was quiet, clean, and entirely devoid of the suffocating pretense of the Vance social circle.

Dr. Marcus Vance—my cousin on my father's side, and the only member of the family who had cut ties with them years ago—walked into the private recovery room with a gentle expression. He had spent the last forty-five minutes examining Mia, checking her ribs, her wrists, and her reflexes while she sat on the examination table clutching a stuffed rabbit he had found for her.

"She’s going to be fine physically, Elena," Marcus said, pulling up a chair beside me. He kept his voice low so Mia, who was currently coloring in a book on the small table, wouldn't be alarmed. "She has some mild bruising on her lower back and left hip from the impact with the floor, but there are no fractures, and her internal organs are clear. I’ve documented everything. The x-rays, the physical bruising patterns, and her personal statement."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Thank you, Marcus."

"The physical injuries will heal in a week," Marcus continued, his face darkening with a familiar, deep-seated anger. "But the psychological impact... Elena, she was kicked by an adult relative in a room full of people who watched and did nothing. That kind of betrayal runs deep. I want her to see a child therapist I trust. Someone who specializes in trauma and family abuse."

"I’ll arrange it tomorrow," I said, my hand squeezing the strap of my purse. "I won't let them near her again. Never again."

"I heard about what happened after you left," Marcus said, a small, grim smile appearing on his lips. "Arthur Blackwood’s team didn't waste any time. By midnight, the private security detail had cleared the ballroom. They didn't even let them finish the expensive catering. Your mother tried to argue that she had a right to stay because of the 'historical family residence' clause, but Blackwood pointed out that she signed away those rights when she took the secondary bailout funds three years ago."

"She was so busy trying to save her reputation that she didn't even read what she was signing," I murmured. "She thought she was signing a standard collateral agreement. She didn't realize she was handing over the entire family estate to a private holding company."

"And Sarah?"

"Sarah is currently at a boutique hotel in Midtown, paying with a credit card that I’m about to freeze tomorrow morning," I said coldly. "The Vance family accounts are entirely controlled by the holding company now. I’ve spent the last six months quiet, letting them believe they had won, letting them run up their debts so I could secure every single line of credit they had. They have nothing left, Marcus. No cash, no real estate, no corporate standing."

"They're going to fight, Elena," Marcus warned, leaning forward. "Your mother is a vicious woman when her social standing is threatened. She will try to use Mia. She will try to paint you as an unfit, vindictive mother who is withholding her grandchild out of spite."

"Let her try," I said, standing up and walking over to the examination table where Mia was coloring. I sat beside my daughter, gently wrapping my arm around her small shoulders. She leaned into me, her small head resting against my ribs, her breathing finally slow and regular. "I have the medical report. I have the security footage from the ballroom. And I have the financial records of every dollar they stole from my father’s trust. If they want a war, Marcus, I will give them one that will leave them with absolutely nothing."
