Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

The evening sun began its slow descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep gold, violent violet, and soft crimson.
The sailboat glided smoothly across the calm waters of Lake Michigan, her sails catching the warm summer breeze.
I stood at the wooden helm, holding the wheel with steady, confident hands.
Beside me stood Marcus Thorne, Sarah Lin, and Miller, enjoying the peaceful sound of the hull cutting through the water. Eleanor sat near the bow, watching the sunset with a serene smile on her face.
I wore an open-backed summer dress—a deep ocean blue that flowed around my ankles in the wind.
For the first time in five years, I did not hide my back.
The scars were there—broad, jagged, and pale against my sun-kissed skin. They crisscrossed my spine like a map of a forgotten battleground.
A group of young sailors on a nearby Navy training cutter spotted our sailboat. They pulled up alongside us, their sharp eyes taking in the vessel.
Then, the young Lieutenant standing at the cutter’s bridge recognized my face.
Through his binoculars, he saw the legendary Captain Clarissa Vance standing at the helm of her ship, her scarred back exposed proudly to the sun, holding the wheel with unwavering strength.
The Lieutenant immediately snapped to attention.
"All hands on deck!" his voice boomed across the water over the cutter's loudspeaker. "Man the rails! Render honors to Captain Vance!"
Twenty young naval midshipmen and officers lined up along the deck of the warship, snapping their heels together, raising their hands in a simultaneous, flawless salute across the water.
SALUTE!
The sharp, disciplined gesture echoed across the calm waves of the lake—a salute born not of fear or political obligation, but of deep, unyielding respect for the woman who had saved their fleet.
I looked across the water at the young faces of the Navy's future.
I let go of the helm with my right hand, stood tall, and raised my hand to my temple, returning their salute with all the pride, strength, and love in my heart.
The wind caught my hair, lifting it over my shoulders.
My sister had tried to use my scars to humiliate me. My father had tried to use his power to erase me. My enemies had tried to sink me at the bottom of the ocean.
But they had all failed.
The scars on my back were not marks of defeat. They were my armor. They were my medal of honor. They were the proof that I had walked through fire, survived the storm, and come out on the other side unbroken.
Vincent, Arthur, Mercer, and the shadow empire of greed were gone, swallowed by the justice they had tried to evade.

Standing on the deck of my ship, surrounded by the people who loved me and the vast, beautiful expanse of the open water, I took a deep, clear breath of the salty air.
My name was Captain Clarissa Vance. My past was clear. My sky was open. And my ship was finally home.
