Chapter 2 - The Police Statement

By midnight, the quiet sanctuary of Oliver's hospital room was filled with the presence of two uniformed officers and an investigator from the Department of Children and Family Services named Officer Rebecca Torres.

Officer Torres sat in a chair beside Oliver's bed, holding a small voice recorder. She was a woman in her late forty's with kind, watchful eyes, but her expression turned dangerously grim as she reviewed the medical chart handed to her by the doctor.

"Mrs. Vance," Officer Torres said gently, turning to me. "I need you to tell me everything Oliver told you when you found him at home."

I laid out every detail: the cold hallway, his blue lips, his statement that he knocked on the restaurant window while his father, his grandmother Evelyn, his grandfather Arthur, and his aunt Clara sat inside enjoying their dinner.

"He told me he kept knocking," I said, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to stay calm. "He told me nobody came to open the door."

Officer Torres nodded, then lowered herself so she was at eye-level with Oliver. "Oliver, honey? My name is Rebecca. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions about tonight?"

Oliver looked at me. I nodded reassuringly, taking his small, re-warmed hand in mine.

"Oliver," Officer Torres asked softly. "When your daddy told you to go outside, did he give you the keys to the car?"

Oliver shook his head. "No. The car was locked. I tried the handle, but it wouldn't open."

My heart shattered all over again. He hadn't even been inside a locked vehicle—he had been standing in the open, freezing alleyway beside the restaurant.

"Where did you stand, sweetie?" Officer Torres asked.

"By the big glass window," Oliver whispered, clutching his stuffed bear. "I could see Grandma eating her soup. I knocked on the glass with my shoe because my fingers didn't work anymore. Grandma looked at me, but then she pulled the blind down."

A heavy, suffocating silence filled the hospital room. One of the uniformed officers standing near the door let out a soft curse under his breath, turning away to write furiously in his notepad.

Evelyn Vance—a woman who spent her life boasting about her family's prestige, their high-society dinners, and their pristine lineage—had intentionally pulled down the window shade to block out the sight of her freezing grandson.

"Thank you, Oliver," Officer Torres said, her voice tight with suppressed fury. She stood up and signaled for me to step out into the hallway with her.

Outside the room, Officer Torres pulled a legal folder from her bag. "Mrs. Vance, this is no longer just a custody dispute or a disciplinary misunderstanding. This is felony child endangerment and criminal neglect. We are pulling the security camera footage from The Bistro on 5th tonight. If what Oliver said is on those tapes, warrants will be issued before sunrise."

"Issue them," I said, my voice cold and hard as iron. "Because I am going to tear down every single piece of that family."
