Chapter 10 - The Light in the Windows

That evening, after our guests had departed and the stars began to glitter across the clear Pennsylvania sky, I walked up the stairs to the boys' bedroom.
The night terrors were a thing of the past. The room was warm, filled with soft blue nightlights shaped like galaxies, model airplanes hanging from the ceiling, and drawings of superheroes pinned to the walls.
Ethan and Caleb were tucked beneath their star-patterned comforters. Maya was sitting on the edge of Caleb’s bed, finishing the last chapter of a bedtime storybook.
When I stepped into the room, both boys looked up with bright, clear eyes.
"Daddy!" Caleb called out. "Maya said we can go camping in the backyard next weekend!"
"We can build a real campfire and make s'mores!" Ethan added, sitting up in bed, his small face radiant with excitement.
"Only if you both get a good night's sleep tonight," I smiled, walking over and sitting beside Ethan.
I pulled the covers up over his shoulders, tucking him in, then leaned down to press a kiss against his forehead. I walked over to Caleb’s bed, doing the same for him.
"Daddy?" Ethan whispered softly as I stood near the light switch.
"Yes, buddy?"
"Is the dark place gone forever?" he asked, his voice calm, without a trace of fear, simply seeking confirmation of the safety he now felt every day.
I looked at my sons, then at Maya standing by the window, and finally out at the warm, peaceful estate that had finally become a real home.
"It’s gone forever, Ethan," I said, my voice filled with complete, absolute conviction. "There are no dark places here anymore. Only light."
Caleb smiled, closing his eyes as his small hands gripped his favorite stuffed bear. "Good night, Daddy. Good night, Maya."
"Good night, my brave boys," I whispered.
I turned off the main light, leaving the soft galaxy nightlights casting gentle blue stars across the ceiling, and stepped into the hallway with Maya.

As we walked down the grand staircase together, the house was filled with a profound, beautiful silence—not the quiet of fear or hidden secrets, but the quiet of a family healed, protected, and restored.
I looked up at the high ceilings that had once echoed with panic, knowing that no matter what challenges lay ahead, my sons would grow up knowing they were safe, loved, and guarded by a father who would tear down the world before letting anyone hurt them again.
